PICTURES SOLD FOR CLOTHES

Distress In France

In spite of the exchange, mar- ket, where artists "sell" their pictures for groceries, clothes or the services of doctors, tailors, builders and the like, the distress among them this winter is per- haps greater than that of any other class in this city, writes a special correspondent of the "Singapore Free Press."

The Paris Town Council has voted a sum of thirty million francs for the assistance of those artists residing in Paris itself. State ald will take the form of. providing work on the restoration of ancient buildings.

Soviet Protest To Germany

Berlin, Feb. 25. It is learned here that the Soviet Government, through its Ambas- sador In Berlin. has addressed a vigorous protest to the German Government against the treatment of a Soviet official named Orlovski, lying dangerously ill at St. Blasien. in the Black Forest.
