SOMALILAND MASSACRE FUTURE OF THE

INCIDENT

Young French Officer's Heroic Death

Paris, January 23. Further details have been re- ceived of the French Somaliland incident in the Diki regten where

French administrative officer and his troops were massacred by Abyssinian tribesmen.

The incident is officially regard- ed as a battle between two tribes of which the Issas ve

cm the French side of the frontier and the Assaimaras on the Abyssinian side, and there has been constant warfare between them.

A high authority suggests that the officer, M. Bernard, who was only 25 years old acted rather imprudently when went to the scene of hostilities to see what was happening..

The French Government does not intend to take any diplomatic action as it recognises that the Abyssinian Government cannot be held responsible for sporadic out lawry on the confines of its king-

dom.

HAND TO HAND TIGHT

M. Bernard died heroically at the head of his small troops. He held s ground for two hours, with 105 Issas tribesmen, who kept 800 flerce Assaimaras at bay until their ammunition was exhausted and then, scorning retreat M Bernard fell in a hand-to-hand encounter with ten cutlass wounds in the head.

He was going to the help of the Issas against the Assaimaras raiders when he was attacked. The whole of his force was mas- sacred.

The Minister for, the Colonies has proposed that Bernard should be posthumously awarded the Cross of a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.

A

Government communique states that Bernard has been "cited in national orders" paying a glowing tribute to his heroism- Reuter:
