London, Dec, 12. Lord Riddell, the politician and newspaper owner. died at his home at Walton Heath, Surrey, aged sixty-nine. He had been for some

time, suffering from the effects of a severe chill,

Besides being a publisher, news- paper owner and chairman of several companies, he philanthropist and author and the friend and confidant of famous, men.

He began life as a solicitor in South Wales, transferred to journa lism and became chairman of the News of the World, Limited. He was also chairman of the News- paper Proprietors' Association.

During the world war he acted in a liaison capacity between the British Press End the various Government Departments. His work in that capacity was respon- sible for breaking down the offcial prejudice which, at the beginning of the war, tried to treat it as a secret that could on no account be divulged to the Press.

Friend Of Fažious Men ** It was from a gathering at his house at Walton Heath that Sir John French first learned that he was likely to lead the Expeditionary Force. That was on the night before the declaration of war.

Mr. Lloyd George, Bir Jobri Simon and Mr. Ramsay MacDonald were dining with Lord Riddell, the tele- phone bell rang, and Sir John French, with whom he was on Intimate terms, asked. Lord Rid- dell:

"Can you tell me, old chap, whether we are going to be in this war?"

Lord Riddell returned to the dining-room and asked what answer he should give. 144
