THE “TALLY”

Centuries of Use

(Special Air Mail Service)

London, Dec. 12.

There seems to be no doubt that the system of Tallles was intro- duced about the time of the Norman Conquest. A tally was originally a square, stick of wood, generally of bazel, and notches were cut in it to represent sums of money, or, in the case of private tallles, a number of sheep pigs, cattle, quantities of grain, timber, and so on.

On two sides particulars of the name of the payer, and the reason of the payment, were written; then Ia cut was made at one end and the | stick was split in two; leaving "a small bit at one end, One of the split pieces was given to the payer,

and the other was kept by the re- ceiver. One piece was called the stock, the other the foil. If a dispute arose at any time the two pieces were put together to see if they would int.

This method of checking the re- ceipt of money was used in the National Exchequer for more than eight centuries. It is certain that the tally was the most ordinary ac- companiment of all kinds of busi- Tiess. When an order was made by the Court for delivery from a Royal forest it was specified that tallies should be made between the fores- ter and those who received the.. timber. The use of private tallies seems to have been quite usual in the thirteenth and fourteenth cen turies; and they are used in the hopfields to-day.

The eight-hundred-years-old system officially came to an end on October 10, 1826, and was brought about by the voluntary retirement of two Chamberlaing whose cuices had been threatened 43 years be- fore by an Act introduced by Edmund Burke in 1783, which put an end to the system on the Stock Exchangt.

An account of the process of making tuilies recently given says: When a sum of money was paid into the Exchequer it was paid to a teller, who made out a bill for the sum he received, with the Christian name of the payer, and his addi- tion and the date of payment. He then threw the bill down a pipe Into the Tally Court. The bill was received by the cutting of tallies, who took a reasonable and pro- "portionate rod of hazel for them, ́and cut them, into fit lengths, and shaped each stick in four sides square that they might be written upon. Immediately on the arrivar

breadth for

of the bill from the teller the tally cutter began to prepare a tally for the amount mentioned in the bills by cutting a notch about a hand's M "Ca thousand pounds), a finger's breadth for C (one hundred), and a still smaller for X (ten pounds); for odd shill- ings he put as many slanting notches, for pence a scratch, for a half-penny a small hole.

The notches were of "respective and precise proportions according to a standing gauge. The cutting

of Exchequer tallies did not vary

for 700 years, and the rules govern. ing the inscriptions were equally rigid.

-

;

The largest sum for which a tally could be made was £50,000. There is one in the Bank of England 8 ft. 6 in. long.
