Tientsin- The petition of the Pukow Railway Administration to purchase 18 locomotives and 15 passenger coaches wagons, in order to expand busi- ness and speed up traffic has been granted by the Ministry of Rail- ways. The cars will be ordered from Britain with funds provided from the British Boxer Indemnity Refund.

NEW RAILWAY

The long railway in Shansi, from Tatung in the north to Puchow in the south, a distance of over 840 kilometres, has been opened to traffic, the total expenditure be- ing estimated at about $15,120,000. A number of other railways are planned, the most important be- ing the Taiyuan-Hsinghsten line. about 260 kilometres in length. Two routes have been surveyed, one from Hokouchin to Hsinghsien and the other from Shinshien on the Tatung-Puchow railway to Hsinghslen, the latter being about 40 kilometres shorter than the former, but the former having the advantage of Lower gradients. Other lines to be built are mostly branches of the Tatung-Fuchow railway on various sections.

RAILWAY IMPROVEMENTS IN NANKING

The sum of $190,000 has been allotted by the Ministry of Rail- ways towards the construction of the Central Railway Station in Nanking. Two warehouses will be built at the station for goods stor- age, one for the Nanking-Shang- hal Railway and the other for through traffic service. Three pairs of tracks will be laid in or- der to facilitate transportation at". the station..

Hein Hsin-This concern is of "very recent origin, being establish- ed in May, 1933 with a capital of $1,000. It employs 160 workers, whose wages amount to $1,500 monthly. The yearly output, 60,- 000 square feet, is entirely made. by hand, and is exported to the United States. The woollen thread consumed annually amounts to more than 60,000 lbs. valued at over $30,000, and is supplied - by dealers in Haining and Chahar.

It should be noted that in addi-, tion to their wages, workers in these factories receive, free board and lodging from their employers.
