At the opening of the market in New York on Saturday Sterling was quoted at 4.97) but eased to à closing rate of 4.97,
Marker Uncertain at the opening but subsequently cased off slightly, but reacted again later; the tone being quite steady.

There were sellers after the opening at 1/Sk, buyers bidding 1/3 3716 resulting in a small bust- ness at 1/8 3/16 for January de- livery followed by a small business at 1/8 5/32 for second half, Janu- ary. At this stage the market re- acted and a fair amount of "busi- ness was done at 1/8 5/32 for near delivery and 1/8 3/16 was again arranged for February. The mar ket closed at lunch time with sell- ers at 1/8 5/32 December-January and 1/8 3/16 February. buyers at 1/82 bisher respectively.
U.S. Dollars Business was done early in the morning at 41 11/16 for near. 417 January and 411 February. Later the market steadied up and busi- ness was done at 41 13/16 for January and 41 for cash. The market closed at lunch. time with sellers at 41 11/16 December, 41 13/16 January and 417 February. buyers at 41 13/16 December, 417 January and '42 February.

Sterling was quoted at 1/4 5/10 for near and. 1/4 1/16 for forward. Both rates improved subsequently to 1/4 7/16 and to 1.4. Dollars closed at 34 1/18 for near and 331 for forward after opening at 33 13/16 for near and 331 for forward. The spot market was particularly robust:

IN THE AFTERNOON Merket conditions were dull in the afternoon.
Sterling, was on offer at 1/8 5/32 for near delivery at which rate business was done as was also 1/8 3/18 for January. Business was done in Dollars at 41 13/16 for January. The market closed with sellers of Sterling at 1/8 5/32 with buyers at 1/8 3/16. the latter be- ing willing to accept delivery the second half of December. Dollars, sellers at 41 11/16 December and 41 13/16 January, buyers at 1/16 higher respectively.
Shanghai Dollars-Business was done at 1223 for cash and also at 123 3/8 January. There were sell- ers at 122 for cash, buyers prob- ably at 1227 cash.
