PACIFIC SUBSIDY
ASSAILED
No Postal Value
Washington, Nov. 13...
The States Steamship Co. will be forced to discontinue its trans- Pacific service it its mali.contract is withdrawn, it was declared to- day at the investigation bere into Ocean" mail subsidies.
This statement was made by Mr. Alfred Hampson, attorney for the shipping company, in defence of the $2,500,000 subsidy paid to the iine over and above the usual poundage rate for ocean mail.

Counsel for the Government said that the States Steamship Co.'s. 26: per cent. profit was largely due to the mall contract.
Mr. Page alleged that the com- pany had failed to create a fund for reconditioning vessels on ex- piration of the contracts, despite this large pront, thereby violating the company's promise to put into operation a first-class fleet of steamships on the trans-Pacific TUN
