ALICE IN WONDERLAND'

MISSTM JOAN SHANNON THE

"HEROINE"

Brilliant Function In Kowloon

One of the most brillant functions ever witnessed in Kow- loon took place at the St. Andrew's Church grounds on Saturday afternoon when the much-beraided "Alice in Wonderland" fete was held in the presence of a large gathering.

W

The grounds were transformed into a realistle presentation of the "Wonderland” which Alice discovered, by the cleverly- costumed characters of Lewis Carroll's famous book, colourful surroundings, raily decorated stalls, and all the fan of the Fair.

Little Miss Jaan Shannon, who was selected from a large number of applicants for the role of "Alice," played her part ex- tremely well, and the quaint and angsstiming manner she dis- played as the paraded over ber "domain" won the admiration 'of everyone present.

That the function met with considerable success can be gauged from the fact that those responsible have decided to. hold the Fete again to-day, commencing at 2.30 p.m. Accompanied by her "court at tendants" all in fancy dress cos- arrived at the tumes, "Alice" Churchyard in a motor-truck gally decorated and was met on arrival by the Vicar of the Church, the Rev. J. R. Higgs. "Alice" was then introduced to the Hon. Mr. R. E. Lindsell, the chairman of the Fete. Mr. Lindsell in his speech, re- marked that it was a great hon- our to be chairman of such a fete. himself Both Mrs. Lindsell and old Kowloon were

residents and had spent many happy years in the Wonderland of Kowloon."

sure we shall all spend as much es we can because a good cause becomes a Lost Cause "unless we give our money to it.

Mr. Lindsell then recited the following parody for the occasion.

Will you please roll up in hun- dreds said the Vicar to Kowloon.

There'll be others close behind you so you can't get here too soon. ..You can really have no notion how delightful it can be, To visit. all the stalls and shows and then sit down to tea,

To St. Andrew's then, you parents with your children all repair,

Now don't revoke, beloved folk, but come and join the Fair. Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, etc., etc.!

Of course you will and have." "It is my great honour, "conclud- invite the ed Mr. Lindseli, "to

from the young lady, selected crowd of competitors to be the Pairon Godess of your "Wonder- land,' to open the Fair.

ALICE'S SPEECH

"Alice" then made her address of welcome, reciting the long speech without hesitation in a clear voice. Gentlemen, Ladies and Chairman, -Oh dear, I feel that that is the wrong way round to begin with but just everything has been topsy-turvy since I went down that rabbit hole. And now I have been

The good people too, who are running stalls and other things have been working so hard that We really must support them. They have been working for six months which is really quite a long time.

In a moment I am going to see the stalls myself, and I am sure you will come with me. I have a strange feeling that this Fete (and certainly my speech), ls the stuff that dreams are made of...but as you know. dreams often have a way of coming true..

Official Observance

To-day is the 68th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's birth, and Chinese of the Kuo Min Tang Party in China, and throughout the world will pay homage to a man, who spent practically his whole He working for the success of the revolution, which made China a Republic.

The Chief observance will be held at Nanking, the Capital of the Nationalist Government, where the remains of Dr. Sun Yat Sen now lle in the vault in the stately mausoleum on the slopes of the Purple Mountain.

It will be remembered that Dr. Sun Yat Sen was intimately con- nected with Hong Kong, for it was here that he received part of his education as a medical student of the Hong Kong School of Medicine.

Dr. Sun Yat Sen was born in 1866 in the Heung Shan District. now named Chung Shan, In The province of Kwangtung.

The Rev. Higgs concluded with the remark that the Fair was like a love match. "Once you get into it, you can't get out without a lot of expense." He hoped that this would be an inducement for everyone to patronise the stalls freely.

Miss Alice then made an official tour of the stalls in the Church grounds which were then nounced to be open.

TRAINING GALLOPS

Racing Boy And Flying Tourist Impress

(BY MORNING DEW"?

Two very good gallops were seen at the course on Saturday. The first was by Racing Boy, who went over a mile in 2.12.2, running very comfortably, while the other good rallop was by Flying Tourist, who covered six furlongs in 1.35.1, finishing rather tired, in 31 seconds.

Another interesting gallop was that of Brilliant Star who has only last week returned from Shanghai The poor has been entered for the St. Leger and his gallop was therefore of more than ordinary interest. He was sent over a slow mile and 2 quarter and gave a good impression. King's Warden did a ̧ use- ful mile and appears to be steadily improving. Hydroplane finished his, mille and a quarter gallop very comfortably in thirty seconds!

- Racing Heart went over a very impressive mile and a quarter and looks a good thing for the "Aussie" St. Leger. Bag Tor and Mutiny Bag also went well.
