PROPERTY SLUMP.
By The Scout
The slump in the property market continues and in conversa- tion with one of the largest pro- perty, owners in the Colony the other day, I was informed that al- though property was cheap at the beginning of this year, it is even cheaper now, for there has been a further fall of some ten to fifteen per cent, on values prevailing at the beginning of this year. I un derstand also that there are quite a number of houses for sale on the local market and that anybody with a bit of spare cash could eastly pick up some bargains. In the Western district in Hong Kong one would be surprised to see the number of vacant houses. A good few of the former occupants of the now-vacated houses have mov- ed down to the Reclamation, in Wanchal but there seem to be no dearth of fats in Wanchai where rents have been coming steadily.
A BIG CHANGE-
down
Talking about the West Point district, what a change has come over the place! What previously was a populous district with all kinds of shops, might to-day be rightly described as a dull lifeless area. At night the change is even more remarkable and there is hard- ly any night life to speak off. I understand that the few big re- etaurants that still do business there are not by any means doing the business they used to do in the pre-depression days.

LEARNING ENGLISH
The automatic traffic signal at the junction of Peddar Street and Des Voeux Road is still not "auto- matic" in the sense that it only winks red and green at regular in- tervals and not according to the demand of the traffic. I mention the matter because in the evening. when trafic is very light at this part of the city, the red and green signals operates at intervals that 3pear to be too long. with the "result that motor cars and trams are unnecessarily held up. From time to time we hear interesting views from Europeans as to the best method of teaching English to the Chinese. What I would like to read about, or listen to, is a lecture or paper by some Chinese giving an account of the difficulties which he encountered when first learning English fam sure such a paper can be quite in-
day when some shining light in the Chinese community will undertake the task. The paper will be as in teresting as a European's views of the difficulties of learning Chinese-
