The Board of the South Man- churia Railway Company expres- ses reluctance to give ready ap-

sidiary concern, the Showa Steel Works, to increase its production capacity. It has now instructed the Supervising Section to study the scheme again.

According to the recent ex- planation by Admiral Godo, pre- `sident of the, Shows Steel Works, the Company wants to increase 'Its capacity from 350,000 to 500,- 000 tons a year at a cost of Yen. 26,000,000 as the original plan will not meet the demand which is bound to increase as the 1935-8 crisis approaches. The Manage-

ment is confident that the pro- posed extension scheme will have no serious effect on the market.

The 8.M.R. Board is inclined to think, however, that it is too hásty to elect any "modification. In a scheme which is still under way, It is highly problematical, it says, whether the future demani and supply will be along the lines pre- dicted by the Shows Management. Furthermore, when the BMR, it- self is in reed of funds, the ques- tion arises as to the propriety of spending so huge a sum of money in addition.

Banished for a period of ten years in February last, à Chinese named Wong Hin found his way back to the Colony recently. He

the Weser Yard, Bremen, for a second turbo-electric liner of about 18,000 tons gross. for their Far Eastem service, Techni- cal opinion in Germany has always tended rather towards direct Diesel or high-pressure steam and geared turbine" propulsion than to turbo-electric, and hence this second contract for the same yard is of no uttle significance." The turbo-electric ship was pioneered in this country by the P. and O. Company for its Far Eastern ser- vices, and the extra speed and, flexibility of the Strathaird and Strathnaver made possible, a call at Bombay on the way to Australia, and to all intents and purposes rendered unnecessary the fast Aden-Bombay,mail connecting services.Undoubtedly turbo- electric propulsion has attractive features which direct turbíno drive does not possess. This latter is probably at its best where a straight non-stop run at high speed is required; but where portions of the voyage are run at different speeds the ability of the turbo- electric ship to run at about three- cuarter full rated speed with ̈ hálf her propelling machinery shut down cannot be ignored..........・ The German ships will follow. presum ably, accepted Far Eastern practice; BB regards speed and division of power for geäch – alternator and motor.
