A dull morning has to be record- onary. The New York primary ed. Trams and Hotels would seem market was closed and the London market was unchanged on the day's trading. There was nothing to report th the general market, except the sale of 500 New En

which gineerings, Ordinary. changed hands at 5.40 for cash. Although trading opened Monday on the local share market for the November settlement, bidding was very slow. Investors and brokets were not prepared to enter into new commitments until the new silver duty imposed by Nanking was more fully understood. Opin- Jons were many and varied, and several bankers frankly admitted that they could not see exactly what effect the new duties were kely to have on exchange. The

Although the volume of "business was small last Tuesday, the under- tone of the Shanghai rubber share market was firmer, but brokers appeared to be acting cautiously, until they believed that the primary markets were definitely on the upward grade. The general market was very dull and feature- leas.

The only two transactions recorded were: 200 Shanghai Lands at 28, and 200 Caldbeck Pref. at 20, both for, cash. The rubber share market opened quiet and steady on Thursday after Wednesday's holiday, but on re- ceipt of the Singapore opening | rate, which was half of one cent up, the, market hardened, and with a further rise of one-eighth of a. cent at noon, the local market continued feless and the only transaction recorded was 500 M-general market was still very quiet lingtons at 1.75 cash. Friday's and dull rubber Market was distinctly firm- er on better news from London and New York, the former showing an advance of one-eighth to three- sixteenths, and the latter 63 points. The volume of business was on the small side, but this was probably due to a little nervousness on the part of operators after the recent sharp decline. The general market remained very quiet and uninter- esting, the following were the chief transactions recorded: 500 New

Berlin, Oct. 23.

After a buoyant day on Monday the sharemarket continued rising on Tuesday, the chief causator the present upware being the favourable reports of the state of industry, and above all that, con- trary to expectation, the official figures show that the number of hands employed in Germany in September was greater than in. August. Lignites were specially. active. Fixed interest securities were neglected so that even a emall amount of stock offered caused prices-to drop.

I hear that Mr. Churchill is planning to journey much farther afeld than he had orginally in- tended-which may explain why he was so anxious to finish his painting of the Parthenon the other day, writes a correspondent.

But this is anything but an idle holiday for Mr. Churchill During most of his cruise he has been making the final revision of the second volume of his life of Marl- borough.
