His time on Saturday of 15hrs 54mins was also a record. It was his third attempt. The three men who had previously swum from this country were?"
Capt. Webb (1875), 21hrs 45mins. f. W. Burgess (1911), 32hrs 35- mins.
H. Sullivan (1923); 2hrs 25mins.
Temme left South Foreland on Saturday at 8.11 a,m, and landed at Cape Blanc Nez at 10.5 p.m.. after covering a total distance of about 38 miles. Weather condi tions were very favourable.
Dramatic Finish. Temme used the trudgeon stroke throughout. He started without goggles, but soon asked for them.
At about 7.30 he was doing 21 strat kes a minute and going strongly, shouting to those on the accom- manying tug.""It is nice and warm aut here." The temperature of the water was then 62.5 degrees.
At 2.30 p.m. Cape Gris Nez light- house was sighted. Temme had been doing splendidly against the ebb tide, but at 3.30 the flood set
in, and a few minutes later Capt. H. Pearson, of Deal, who was pilot- ing the swim, told Temme he could win. The swimmer was then four miles from the French coast.
At 7.30 his speed slackened, but "soon afterwards the wind dropped
and the sea became calmer.

Ryeland and Mr. W. Haydon as official "witnesses."
Austrian Woman's Success Frau Emma Faber, the Austrian, also swam the Channel, in the op- posite direction on Saturday. She
stared from Cap Gris Nez and landed at South Foreland in the afternoon. She is the ninth woman to accomplish the feat.
As Frau Faber returned at once to France in the motor boat that had accompanied her her time has not yet been definitely äscer- tained.
It was first stated in an agency message from Boulogne that she was in the water for 14hrs 15mins. which beat the re- cord set up by: Miss Ederle, the American, in 1926, of 14hrs 34mins. Another message states, however, that Frau Faber's time was 14hrs 10 mins, which is six minutes more than the record.
OBELISK MEMORY OF "
CAPTAIN COOK
(Special Air-Mail Service)
London, August 22. Thirty-rine blocks of granite, hewn from the rocks of Cape Everard, Victoria, the first paint of Australia sighted by Captain James Cook, the Yorkshire navi gator, arrived at Hull in the steamer Cormorant.
The granite blocks will be erected as an obelisk in memory of Captain Cook at Great Ayton, in North Yorkshire, on the site of the cottage which was his former home. The cottage itseli was taken down and shipped from Hull to Australia, where it has been re-erected in Melbourne,
This will add to the monuments which exist in memory of the famous sailor; on the heights of Ensby Moor stands a monument erected to his memory in 1827 by Robert Campion of Whitby, and there is also a memorial to several members of Captain Cook's family in the church-yard of Great Ayton, which is said to have been carved by Captain Cook and his father, who was a work- ing stonemason.
