MILLINERY TURNS TO THE VICTORIAN COLOURS

Shades Of The Nineties-Plum And Magenta Becoming Mulberry Tone

When

on

everyone is still holiday, berets of all kinds make special appeal. They are a great improvement on the earlier ones, and by their Victorian air fore- cast that influence of the last century which is an interesting note of mininery.

In colourings fashion is stress- Ing the shades of the nine les; the familiar cinnamon Band chocolate-browns, "the changing Virginia.creeper reds, the russet apples, coppery beeches and the many bues of the nasturtium family, which, by the way, give.. us a difficult shade to wear ini yellow when softened by brown or black. A wasp-like beret in brown wool has a yellow stripe with the two-coloured wing placed on the large, flat, floppy crown to match a sporting jersey of the same fabric,

MUCH HANDWORK Sometimes the stripes woven in these new wool fabrics, but the milliners are doing their own cording, for handwork is a characteristic point in the new. early autumn headgear, especial- -ly for sport." A beret of velvet in a dull red shade, all corded by hand and tilted well over the eyed, with a narrow wool and Velvet scarf is good when WON with a simple suit of plain wool to tone.

Smartest of all is a mail white corded cloth cáp worn well over one eye. This is accompanied by a three-quarter loose cost of the same fabric with a black tweed skirt.

Navy blue is the rival of black and white for the seaside, but for the moors the dull Victorian shades are prominent. They are specially suited to heathery mix- "tures and tweeds and the new woollen ranges Navy blue is ideal for sea and in towns, 'but' on the heather, it can appear cold and dull-looking.

Plum and even magenta are most cleverly treated and also the dead mulberry tone, which is more becoming than almos any colour to the golden-ha red woman or to the white locks of older women, the ripe black- berry shade dashed with magenta la good in soft - jersey fabric, moire and velvet

Fells, especially of the new light weight, look their best in the clear, pater shades. Neat felt shapes with new manipulated and hand-worked embroidered

crowns, are the immediate alter- native to the larger berets. These fit the head and shade the eyes The crown, or band is often inserted with insets of drawn- work or open-work treHis This kind of embroidered effect wil be much seen in velvet and tweed

The smartest of novelties to go with travel or sweed sultings is a tweed cap al inserted with fine drawn-thread-work (made from wool) or a trellia of the fabric. This is worn with a y-away vell to tone in colour, It sounds Incongruous, sporting like tweedy stuff, daintily hand- worked, and a ridiculous short véli Yet these caps are delight

GLASS BUTTON

VOGUE

New Designs

Buttons arc important this season. At a recent dress show .contrasting buttons were a fea-- ture on many of the models. Dark navy-blue buttons or v.vid scarlet discs stood out against cream or white cloth.

Ivory marble-shaped buttons on black, nigger-brown, or turquoise, and so on. Neat in design, the new buttons are conspicuous for, decorative qualities, having

tiny inset in a contrasting co- lour to tone with the fabric with which they are used. or in gilt or chromium stripes.

Glass buttons destined for summer frocks are made in up- standing shapes, rarely circular or flat One interesting design seen in all the newest colourings in vague this season consists of two layers, one placed above the other.

The lower is a circle of clear co- loured glass. the upper layer a cut off circle in opaque glass in- set with a raised design. But- tons of this order give an to-date look to a dress.

The Magic Mirror

Snowdrop's mirror, in the fairy tale, could not be more honest than the double sided mirror.

One side, blue tinted, shows ex- actly what the modern woman's make-up looks like in day-light, though it may have been applied by artificial light.

ful, giving a change from the va saries of the beret.

SMALLER VEILS

Many of these tweed hand- worked shapes. with their "pert vetis, have a close resemblance to the pork-ple of a Leech drawing Not in tweed, as in this season, they were then of crepe, fallie, and velvet. The veti of to-day's pork-ple is more impertinent than ever; just a tiny fixed flounce of fine meshed net spot- ted with chenfile," "..

In hot days on the Continent, and in gardens, the wide dat pancakes of linen, straw Leghorn, or white Manilla are si worn: These shapes droop over the face and rest on the hair at the back Some have white brims and black crown. Fabrie hats wi fridge the gült between the fur: felts, velours, and plush of the coming winter models.
