One of the oldest oficers of the RAF in point of flying service has now retired in the person of Air Marshal Bir Robert Clark-Hall, K.BE, C.M.G., DS.O. He took his pilot's certificate, No. 127, on Aug- ust 29, 1911,' when a lieutenant. R.N. Only three oficers now on the active list are senior to him in this respect-Air Vice-Marshal - A. M. Longmore (No. 72), Group Cap- tain T. G. Hetherington (No. 105), and

Sir Robert Clark-Hall was a squadron commander, R.NAB.,- st Eastchurch when the War began, and was the first specialist arma- ment officer of the Naval Wing. He commanded the
aircraft-carrier
Ark Royal in the "Dardanelles in 1914-16, and No. 1 Wing at Dunkirk during 1917. for which he was made D.8.0. On the formation of the RAF in 1918 he was graded as colonel, and a permanent commis- slon as wing. commander was granted him in 1919, followed by early promotion to group, captain. He was in command of the RAF. In the Mediterranean in 1925-29; was Director of Equipment, Air Ministry, in 1929-31; and has since commanded
Area, the Coastal RAF. He now retires at the age of 51.
