TRAINING GALLOPS

Full Particulars of Saturday's Tryouts at the Valley

BY MORNING DEW”...........

With the approach of the racing season, training times will appear regularly in the "Daily Press," again, Saturday's gallops appearing on: Monday and the mid- week gallops in Thursday's issue..

Below will be found the times “clocked" last Satur- day. There were no outstanding efforts, but it may be interesting to observe that among the Australian ponies which moved well Racing Heart and Just That impressed the must. Don, Cossack's Beauty, Gladiator, Warring ton, Copper Idol, Chow Fau, and Hey Tor were some of the China ponies which appeared in good trim.

A novices event, with thirteen entries, was the feature. of Saturday morning's gallops. A full description ap- pears elsewhere in this issue.

The times taken on Saturday are as follows:—

FULL DRESS REHEARSAL ON SAND TRACK

The monotony which prevails at Happy Valley each morning during the training preparation was re- llevad on Saturday by the staging of an unofficial novices race. The eyent, which was sponsored by the ofacials of the Jockey Club proved a thorough success and promises to be a regular weekly feature.

Promptly at 7-15, after most of the poles have done their morn- ing's work, the signal to clear the course was given by Mr. T. E. Pearce who rang the "saddling''bell The entries (both ponies and joc- keys) had been sent in a few days before, and the handicaps duly worked out, the Handicapper ap- parently, taking into consideration, not only the quality of the pony but the ability of the jockey as well!

A few minutes after the saddling bell, the jockeys issued from the weighing room-thirteen in all! There were originally fourteen en- tries, but one of the entrants, Mr. E. Joseph, stood down.

Mak Wai-ining, versatile swim- ming star of the Chinese Civil Service Swimming Club added further to his laurels on Saturday night when he took first place in the 200 Metres. Breast Stroke event. Although eclipsed in the 400 Me- tres Free Style by Chan Fuk-sing, Mak Wal-ming put up a spirited showing and lost as a result of a last minute spurt by Chan Fuk- sing.

Strange to relate, although Chan Fuk-sing has been suspended by the Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation for 1 year as a result of a disgusting scene at a water palo game a month ago, he par- ticipated on Saturday night in an open relay event against other Chinese Clubs aliated to the Federation. Doubtless this was an oversight on the part of the Civil Service Club in allowing Chan Fuk-sing to participate.

Swimming.conditions on Satur- day night were far from ideal and one event haq. to be cancelled awing to the choppy sea and high winds prevailing.

The following were the results: 150. Metres relay:1 Chinese Athletic Club; 2. Chinese Cirli Servants: 3. Chinese Bathing Club.

AND GRIMMITT

K

WIN PAIRS TITLE

Inspired Bowls Witnessed

At K. B. G. C.

Some brilliant bowls was seen alt, the Kowloon Bowling Green Club yesterday when FW. Jones and A. W. Grimmitt' won the Oper Fairs Championship final by de- feating W. K. Way and Ag Gomes, 28-10 in a very keenly contested encounter.

36

The score by no means gives an as both indication of the play pairs were neck and neck up to, the eighth head when Grimmitt and Jones Ied 9-8,

Thereafter the latter pair play- ed-inspired bowls and as a result the Craigengower pair did not score. for the ensuing 11 heads, scoring a two on the 20th head, for Jones and Grimmitt. to take a comfor- table victory on the 21st heads. Jones was the best of the four contestants and played one of the finest games seen at the Bowling

Green for some time, although it must be said that Grimmitt also played at the top of his form

Way was the better of the losing pair and it was only inexperience which accounted for, the tremend- ous difference in the play from the 9th head onwards.

This la the second. final which Grimmitt has taken part in, hay. ing been in the winning four in the Open. Rink Championship.

Police Success

Vagp; The Carp, and Colombo were prominent all the way round, with Delightful Chance lying handily behind them. The others were well strung out.

The Police accounted for the The Cary led the way into the | Kowloon Dockltes on two out of straight followed by Delightful three, rinks. Moss's team led by Chance. Vago and Colombo. Five lengths separated Delightful Chance from The Carp who was icky to find a place at all as Vago and Racing Spirit were 'close on his heels at the finish.

Recreio Wins

The Club de Recreio scored а comfortable win over the K.C.C. on their home ground, winning on all three rinks, C. G. SIlva's team beat J. Fraser's four by a single shot (19-18), F. X. Silva's rink won by the big margin of 34-11 against A. E. Silkstone's four" while A. H. Basto also score a win.

Dr. Lee rode an excellent race and we feel convinced that he is booked for a good time, as already coming away against Phillips with the more forward of the "memsa-five shots to spare. hlbs" are giving him the force over."..

The successful riders were given great ovation by those present. It seems unnecessary to add that no time was lost in drawing up a sweep on the race and most of the people present had some interest in the event...

Some Other Handicaps Black Velvet's handicap was 148 pounds, but his jockey could not make less than 190 lbs. Harbour view, it was seen after the race, "was slow to get away because one' of his jockey's stirrups was broken at the start.

The time for the last mile was 2.17, which considering the class of the ponies, and the fact that they were on the sand track was not bad at all.

C.S.C.C.: Unlucky

Civil Service were unlucky to lose on their home ground. Hol- lidge was not playing his usual sound game and went down by a single shot to R. Wallace (18-19). Deakin met with no success being beaten by Chalmers to the tune of 29-11. Birange beat Norrie by 24 shots to 11. The home team therefore went under by six shots (59-53), but had Hodge or Dea- kin had a fair share of the luck going, things might have been very different.
