The smartest fashions from the English collections will shortly go North, writes a correspondent.

For shooting stalking and fishing there never is very great change. Heather mixtures and greeny- grey fishing shades must be more or less adhered to. Cut has im- proved of late, and the popu- larity of shorts for the young and silm has helped sports clothes. Another factor in this

year's sports fashions, is the enormous variety in materials, and the use of thinner stuffs that nowadays can stand the tailor's iron arid quite hard wear. Linen-tweed is one of the most satisfactory.

The short klit coat in plain unlined flannel looks well work over pleated shorts of a small checked linen-tweed." This sea- son sportswomen will be better equipped for a continuation of warm weather. Bo often they have complained of too heavy tweeds, as even in late autumn it can be very warm up North.

Olled Tweed

There will be the ofled-tweed suit for rain, and the orthodox Norfolk Jacket with its patch pockets. The new Norfolks are smarter and look very attrac- tive made of linen-tweed in neutral colouring. They can be worn over shorts or one of the new slit tailored skirts, for skirts for the masculine type of clothes will be short and straight. The Dewer frocks forcast this ten- dency; in fact, the Scotch ward- robe at this season predicts cer- tain subtle changes ahead.

Beach Fashions

In зerseys and cardigans cot: ton-and-wool mixtures will still have their turn. Long striped pullovers, rather like tunics br smocks, are worn with wide string and leather belts. They savour more of beach fashions, but they can look very well over light an- gorá dresses. Some of these straight pullovers in cotton and and wool mixtures are worn with a dark wool coat and skirt in place of washing silk shirts.

Hand-knitted, styles are more extensive than ever. There are all sorts of new soft knitted tweeds for Scotland that wear and keep their shape quite as well as the harsher variety. With them are worn contrasting berets and scarves which can add the orighter touch to neutral and practical colours. Brown, a new chocolate shade, fs, a favourite, and looks delightful when brigh- tened by beret "and scart of peri- winkle blug, bordered with brown. A dull grey is treated in a milar † fashion with jade green.""

There are many novel accesso- ries that can brighten up prac tical country wardrobes. Blik scarves, woven in hand-knit design, are worn with suits and ensembles of darker hues, for tallored clothes are mostly dark, cut with slim coat coat and nat row skirt.

An Adaptable “Creature"

People are rather fond of de- crying the Hong Kong girl...but even her severest critics have got 16 admit that the creature is very adaptable...and why? because she HAS to be poor thing...with a climate Hike. ours!

One week she is frozen by Icy. winds...the next, she is stifled by clammy fog....then comes a week of torrential rain, when she must splash down to her office in rub- ber boots and a mackintosh...and then, (without the slightest warn- ing) she is plunged into, tropical heat....but is she hot or bother ed? No not shel. The creature emerges from her mackintosh-- chrysalls, complete with the cool- est of sleeveless frocks, the smart- est of toeless sandals, and the widest of shady hats; serene,and smiling, and quite ready for any thing up to 99 in the shade! What do you wear on the Beach? It is rather interesting to note how diferent women react to really tropical heat, and one can get at interesting aide-light on character by watching what a pretty woman wears on the beach. There is the type who comes down to the sea in a really smart frock and hat...and her opposite number, who hunts up last year's garments to hack-out on the hands.

There is the girl who chooses beach pyjamas, because they are so easy to wear and so comfört - able; and the girl who arrives on the back of the boy-friends mo- tor-bike in a coloured shirt and white drill trousers.

Sea-Urchins and Smart Women

There is the girl who follows the latest fashion of the shortest of "shorts," and a big triangular scarf knotted at the neck and waist..an admirable costume this for those who like their sun tan spread evenly; and ideal for those who live near the waters edge, (at Bhek'o or Deep Water Bay), but hopeless for those who have to motor a long distance, or travel by Peak Tram or Ferry, But exen these handicaps can be circumvented by adopting the latest fashion of a wran-over skirt (which is fastened together by two big buttons), and a colour- ed sportex shirt with a zip fasten er. By means of these two simple garments the "sea-urchin" can be changed into a smart young wo man in less time than it has taken me to tell about it.
