Paul von Hindenburg was born on October 3. 1847 in Posen and was the son of an officer. At the age of 18, he joined the Prussian- Army and served throughout the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870- 71. He had a very distinguished career and retired from the Army ir 1911 but in 1914 he was recalled and appointed to the command of the German troops in East Prussia. In August 1916 he was appointed Chief of the General Star of the Field Army and from that time to.
