At the age of 18, he joined the Prussian- Army and served throughout the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870- 71. He had a very distinguished career and retired from the Army ir 1911 but in 1914 he was recalled and appointed to the command of the German troops in East Prussia.
