DAVIS CUP - TENNIS

Britain Lead America

London, July 28, Victories by Fred Perry and Bunny Austin, in their singles Juatches gave Britain a 2-1 lead over America in the Challenge Round of the Davis Cup tennis tournament at Wimbledon, to-day:

The results were:-

F. J. Perry (Britain) beat Sydney Wood 6-1, 4-6, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2-

H. W. Austin beat Frank Shields, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.

A crowd of 17.000 surrounded the centre court in fine weather to watch the opening match between Austin and Shields.

Austin immediately found his length and took Shields' cannon- ball services with delightful case, skilfully steering his returns down the sidelines with unfailing re- gularity.

The British player jumped into

a 3-1 lead, but Shields then speed- ed up his game and smashed with terrific "power to secure the next three games for a 4-3 lead.

Austin recovered, and, playing at the peak of his form, he ran out for set at 6-4 as the result of fast and "exciting play in which his perfect length to the corders proved the determining factor.

In the second set Wood found his length and forced Perry to the net with deep backhanders. Perry "advanced and engaged in a antense volleying duel and led 3-2 after which Wood, in an inspired spell, firmly established himself at the net.

The High Diving event was dis- appointing in that the three dives nomnated were all "swallows." but the subsequent exhibition by E. F. Selk. Ed da Ruza, the Colony's Diving champion and Lionel Roza Pereira made up for the loss of interest in the event...

Water Polo

The Bnal event was the water- polo between the Mobile Machine Guns and the Static Machine Guns, the former winning by five clear goals in a very one-sided affair.
