Your message said to come in- mediately."

"My message?”

The one I got at my club, Didn't you telephone?"

Revel was frankly puzzled, "Do you mind if we go back and begin this all over again? You say you received a telephone message from me?

"Yes. Naturally, I thought some- thing had happened to Jane. She was supposed to have luncheon with you at Savarin's, wasn't she?" "Oh yes. Yes she was, but un- fortunately some important busi- 'ness came up"

He patted Revel on the back and was turning to the door, when Jane, beating a tea tray, entered from the kitchen. Marche return-father, induced Nicholas Revel to ed her astonished stare.

"You two know each other," said Revel, humorously.

"You're unexpected. Chris," said Jane, "but if you'll stop frowning you may have some tea"

"Or. perhaps you'd prefer whiskey and soda," suggested Revel.

"Neither, thanks," said Marche icily.

"I sniff disapproval," said Jane, arranging the tea things on the ta- bte. "Is it to be tea and toast or no tea and explanations?"

"I haven't asked for explana- tions, Jane."

"Then stop doing those strange things to your face. It makes poor Nick feel embarrassed."

He wrapped the famous jewel in neat package, enclosed this message, made up of letters clipped from newspapers like X's warnings of a new murder about to be com- mitted: "Here's your diamond, Now try to catch me. X" and mailed it to Beotland Yard,

Affairs between Jane and Revel marched quickly after the breaking of her engagement to Marche. They had a gay evening at a night club. Both were good dancers and loved dancing. Despite his resolution, Revel had spoken words of love to her, and Jane had confessed that she loved him.

"We'll always be everything to each other, won't we, Nick?" She whispered, as he held her coat for her as they were ready to leave.

Revel replied, wistfully: "Yes, dear, always."
