WITTY ADDRESS BY MR. R. "R.
CAMPBELL AT ROTARY CLUB
Preferring Milton To A. A. Milne
An extremely amusing and witty talk was given by Mr. R. R. Camp- bell. at the Rotary Club luncheon yesterday. Mr. Campbell called his paper "Taste" and discussed among other things various mat- ters of local interest.
Mr. T. B. Wilson presided at the meeting.

I am not going to trot out the old proverbs about De gustibus all alsi bonum or Chacun à son ragout (Let each stew in his own juice) for the simple reason that I am not going to be weak-kneed about the matter; I am going to say
my 'say with conviction, though it may stir up strife in happy homesteads, May bring about dissension in high places, and may even lead to letters of protest in the papers.
What is Taste? There are two kinds. The first is the noise we make when something is done in & way we are not accustomed to. Someone pronounces the word "centeenary" or "moog," or wears spats at a funeral, or tells a story In mixed company where only anecdotes are allowed, or goes to the Yorkshire Dinner wearing a red rose, (Laughter) and immedi ately. we damn him off-hand either because he has not received a public-school education, or be cause he does not pretend to have it comes to the same thing. It merely means that he is not the sort of man whom we could mix with, not the sort of man we should like our daughters to know.

Now dress has two functions; the Arst, (and in this case it seems the least important), to maintain the warmth of the body: the second to "emphasise the beauty of the body. In his blatantly superior pannor MAN corines himself to the first, but woman reanes herself to the second. The best dress for a woman is one which, while still making some pretence of keeping the wearer warm, fulls its main function of setting off her peculiar charms. A well-dressed woman, then, is one who realises what means she has at her disposal-too often for the sake of art this is decided by her husband-and adapts them as best she can to her purpose, the charming of the other sex. Being always changing her mind as to what men like best about ber her dress is always changing, little by Hittle (sometimes because there is little to change). Many years ago she thought that the sight of just
