CHINESE HIGH OPINION OF BRITISH GOODS
The ships in use in China, both for coastal and river services,, are... mainly of British construction and the great reputation they have won for rellability and long ser--- vice, must result in further orders. being placed in the United King- dom, when ultimately they begin to show signs of appreciable de- cay. It is no uncommon thing to find that these, vessels have done. falty, and even afty years of

Steady Improvement To Improve Peiping.

Hankow Railway
The steady improvement, which has been taking place in the ship- building industry during the past two months, has been a source of great satisfaction in the West of Scotfund, because of the impetus it has given, not only to the iron.. steel and coal trades. but to trade in general. The position has been further strengthened by the an- nouncement of the placing of or- ders for nine more vessels during the past week. Messrs. Harland and Wolf, Limited have received. orders from the Union-Castle Line to build two. 20,000-ton passenger motorships, and two medium-sis- ed cargo motorships. The total value of this order is round about £3.000.000... and although the four vessels will be built at Belfast, all the steel will be supplied by Messrs. Colvilles, and the West of Scotland wil thus have a large

now in its sixtieth year." Such a testimonial to the characteristica of British construction must have an effect upon the outlook of those contemplating the purchase of new equipment of say type. Great Britain suppites most of the locomotives for China, as well as tolling stock and other railway" equipment. Here, again, the Bri- tisk reputation is based on quality and experience with former pur- chases. While such a state of affairs exists, the United Kingdom. producers need have no qualms about possible displacement and can look forward to healthy par- ticipation in whatever Wusiness be-
quantity of steel required will be about 30.000 tons, and when this is added to the tonnage already booked. Messrs. Colvilles
will have about 100,000 tons of steel on· order for shipbuilding purposes alone. Messrs. D. and W. Hen- derson and Company, Limited, Partick, have just received arders from Messrs. P. Henderson and Company, Glasgow to build two cargo ateamers, each of 8,000 tons carrying capacity. One of these vessels is to be fitted with a Step-

1932, and is being maintain- ed, though America still has first place. The position is well shown by the fact that the United King- dem sales increased from 274 to 325, while the American supplies decreased from 651 to 394, this comparison being made between tbe returns for the first four months of 1932 and, 1933. Fur-. ther, the leading position, Is” ta- en by the United Kingdom in aluminium, iron and steel tubes, spring and tool steels, and also io metals and ores outside the usual classifications. There can be little doubt that British .pro- ducers may be proud of what has been done in China, in face of world competition, but there is still scope for further enterprise. The key to further British par- ticipation in the development of the country and its industry, must. be investment, co-operation with Chinese interests, and ald and in-- struction by British technical officials. As progress is made the need for control and educa- tion
will disappear, but the plant will remain as a permanent advertisement of quality and re- liability. The fear of the older Chinese, that control by British managers and engineers of enter- prises financed by "United King- dom firms would lead to the ul- timate subjection of Chia, has now gone. The time tas, there- fore, arrived when collective work, by the individual British interests. for the economic development of China, might lead to the 'more rapid accomplishment of the de- sirable object of winning an even greater share of China's trade than has ever been obtained in the past "Engineering."

They will be of the shelter-dec type and will have the latest eco- nomy-type of steam reciprocating machinery. Messrs. Alexander Stephen and Sons.
