London, Aprli 1. The Governor of the Bank of England. Mr. Montagu, Norman, was described by a stockholder at the half-yearly Court, held today, as being "in command of a 24 horse-power machine."
He added that the Bank's direc torate, which consists of 24 mem- bers, had "an unmistakable stamp on it." This remark caused con- siderable amusement.
Sir Josiah Stamp, one of the Bank's directors, was not present at the meeting.
In acknowledging a vote of thanks from the stockholders. Mr. Norman stated that he was not so much in command, ́as "dragged along" by a 24 horse-power-ma- chine.
Referring to the big rise in the price of the Bank's stock, he stated that the chief beneficiary was the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The A. O. F. Corp. has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. Selling this afternoon seamed. to cause a general weakness in commodities and an air of uncertainty still hängs over the market, which will probably not be relieved until there is more definite news about legislation at Washington. It is thought that the market resisted the selling wave fairly well.
Wheat: General liquidistion and lack of confidence and support caused prices to decline steadily until near the close when longs sold freely. Each dip uncovered the press of stop-loss orders.
Cotton: There is no particular news in the cotton trade to account for the lower market. The sell-off was in sympathy with other markets.
Silver: Prices broke sharply after a frus opening, reflecting the wave of general liquidation following the announcement credited to Speaker Rainey that the President was opposed to silver legislation at this Session of Congress because he wants to work out fally the present silver purchase plan of the Administration,
