So much has been written dur- ing recent years about the econ- omic depression that we are apt to overlook certain features of economic life which are of a more pleasant nature. One of these
is more pleasing features
the general improvement in working- class conditions. During the past twenty or thirty years, hours of labour have decreased, wages have risen, improved machinery has abolished a great deal of heavy manual labour, there are more and much better facilities for recreation, entertainment, and amusement, and there are
more
"social services" than ever before. Call Money 43 to 5, considerable To take only question of wage- demand for Reichs treasury bonds rates and the "cost of living" statistics recently 9 being evident. Young Loan drop- according to

rates are 64 per cent. higher. In the building trades all classes of workers receive higher wages, the increase in weekly rates ranging from 81 per cent. for brick-layers to 82 per cent. for labourers, Engineers have not done so well, their.. increases ranging from 50 per cent.. for iron-moulders to 34 per cent for labours. In some cases in the electrical trades wages have increased by 77. per cent. The transport trades have been the most fortunate, however. Among some grades of railwaymen the increase has been as much as 120 per cent. Thus although un- employment has badly hit, certain sections of labour, the "general conditions of the working classes have greatly improved.

This is a fairly safe assumption since the combine's activities are so widespread that the results are bound to reflect the general trade recovery.
An increase in profits is thus indicated, but it is expected that the board will adopt a conserva- tive dividend policy, especially in view of the hydrogenation devre- lopments which are being financed from the combine's own resources, In-optimistic circles a dividend of 8.p.c. is hoped for on the Ordinary that shares, against 6 p.c, for 1932. Asia Landa, Limited, has received the following report from thear, New: York correspondante, E. A. Pierce & Co. We continue to like this slow and irregular improvement which has not gone far enough to demonstrate con- clusively the beginning of a broad advance. We think that motion pictures retail merchandising, silver and motors are steadily strengthening their market positions.
Wheat: The Thomas Amendment to the Silver Bill, permitting the -purchase of silver until it has reached 31.29 per ounce, is considered
inflationary.
Cotton: A feature was the steadiness of this market despite the relatively small amount of businces.
Silver: Futures were lower early on, with the distant positions grow ing in relative ensiness Banking interests bought near.bys on the decline. Intercat was manifested in the Thomas Amendment.
Business Done: 1,560,000 shares.
