TRADE FIGURES FOR

JANUARY

Both Imports And Exports Show Decline

The Statistical Office of the Imports and Exports Department- reports that both imports and exports of merchandise silli tur- ther declined in the month of January, 1934.

Imports totalled $32.5 millions (£2.4), as against $38.0 ml- Hons (2.4) in the corresponding period of 1933; while exports totalled $27.4 millions (£2.0), as compared with $31.3 millions (2.0).

OBITUARY

Mrs. Noel Collison

The news that Mrs. Jessie Col- ilson (nee McNeil) had passed away at her home in Pearl River, the New York was received in Colony over the week end and will no doubt come as a great shock to her large circle of friends in the Colony. for the deceased was a member of an old and respected family who had settled in Hong Kong for a number of years.

Air-Line Stock "Accounts Made Public

Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh re- cently made public the detailed ac-. counts of his deals with air-linë stocks and denied that he had re- celved huge proāts.""/

. His statement was issued in reply to a storm of adverse comment levelled at him following his recent attack on President Roosevelt for cancelling the American" air-mail contracts.

Colonel Lindbergh's' telegram, given to the press before it was received by the President, acted as a boomerang and brought wide- Spread criticism upon him, inclu- ding charges that he had accepted huge blocks of air-line stocks in return for his services to the com- panies with which he became associated as technical adviser and director and for lending his name to air-line corporations which were involved in the air-mail, frauds.

The filer denied he had obtained huge profits or had received gifts of stock His total profits amounted' only to $187,838, exclusive of profits re-invested in air-line stocks, the airman stated.

The Senate Committee is investi- gating air-mall contracts, however, showing that Colonel Lindbergh received an outright gift of 25,000 shares of Trans-Continental Air Transport stock, then valued at $250,000 in addition to his salary of $10,000 a year for associating him- self with that company.
