DERBY CHANCES REVIEWED

"HEM" PONIES COMING TO THE FOREFRONT

WHAT ABOUT NEW STAR?

(By MORNING DEW")

While a fortnight ago, Mr. Li Shiu Pang's two Derby candidates, Soldier of Britain and Soldier of China were all the rage for the Derby honours, the position to-day seems to be a little more open, the more so since the candidates from the "Hem etables are beginning to show they are worthy of very serious "consideration and can- didates from some of the other stables are coming to the forg.

New Star and Electric Star are coming up nicely these days and it looks as if they will strip fit and well for the Annual Meeting. This stable, at one stage looked as if they were going to be left out of the griffins class, but to-day it would appear that, although they may not have big claims for the Derby, some of the other races open.to griffins will fall to them.

Derby griffins were galloged on Saturday last at noon and Glodia- tor's mile and a quacier in 246 created a very goud impression, the pony" finishing comfortably 30.4. Gladiator is a good locker and his poor performances in the past did not shake the confidence of judges of China pontes, who saw in him a likely challenger to the "Soldiers." Macaroni too is a very good candidate and with such a formidable pair, it would be surprising the odds against the "Hem" stable do not shorten ap- preciably when the racea come round.

Lemberg, the chestnut pony in the stable has a gallop just like Sadko, winner of the Auturan champlons. He was sent out over a mile and a quarter and although he went well in the early stages, I must confess I did not like the way he laboured home. He still has nearly three weeks to improve, but for the present, good as he is. he does not stand in the same category as Boldier of China.
