If Gossip We Must
I really think that all the mu sic-lovers in Hong Kong must have turned out to attend the plano and vocal recital given at the Helena May Institute by Mr...
Mrs. Bowes-smith last and Thursday. The hall was» pocked and some of the late comers got no seats at all and had to camp out on the stairs (no hardship this tho, since one can see, than better and hear "there anywhere else in the "ball) Mi. Bowes-Smith and his wife have from leave only just returned and must have felt very pleased at the warmth of the welcome they received.
A delightful programme had included been arranged which music by Chopin, Brahms, Rach- Schumann, Grieg. manninof Massennest as well as by some delightful modern English songs Mrs. Bowes-Smith looked very charming in a dress of nigger- brown with top and sleeves "of Her. songs transparent lace.

In her second "The Russian song. group a Clock" with its quaint and rhy- thmical accompaniment and slow even phrases, specially pleased the audience. The last group in- cluded Roger Quilter's lovely "Land Of Silence".... a most " unusual and up-to-date. little "ditty called "Neglected Moon " in which the singer's clear dic- tiam enable her audierice to ap- preciate to the full the humour and satire of the words...".) and Woodman's gay litle "Birth- day" which was given so bright- ly and tunefully that the audien ce made an insistant demand for an encore:.

His light and beauti- ful touch, and sympathetic in-. terpretations always give infinite pleasure while his virility, and dramatic re flash forth when ever the music demands it. The first group included Schumans' "Soaring" played with intensity and vigour, also Grieg's haunting "Nocturn and Mowski's de lightful Autumn" which gave the planist full opportunity of giving a brilliant display of musi- cal areworks. But Bowes-Smith always excells, In Chopin and his last group was eagerly awaited and most raptourously received: in response to an enthusiastic encore he came back and gave a vivid and rhythmical inter- retation of a delightful little plece (spun out of cobwebs and moonatilne) by York Bowen
The Council and Members of the various committees were well represented among the au dlences I noticed Mrs. Wolfe and Mrs. Edgar Davidson sitting In the front row, Mrs. Cock came W25 sitting with a friend and near them.
