SUPERSTITION OF

"RANJI”

Favourite Indian "Joshi"

Mr. Roland Wild. the official biographer of the late Jara Sahit of Nawanagar, sails for India after the new year to stay with "Ranji's

Successor.

In Nawanagar he will put the finishing touches to his book which will appear in the spring.

It will tell, rather surprisingly, of "Ranji's" superstitions and that he had a favourite -Indian joshi" ur diviner in Bombay. He fre- quently consulted the diviner on State and personal matters, includ, ing even cricke

When he left for Europe for the war, the "joshi" was the last man whom he saw. He told Ranji that he would not be killed, but that he would lose an eye in 1915.

He los it, not on active service, but at a private shout in Yorkshire.

It was in 1915.

FULFILLING A PROPHECY When Ranji came to England in 1832 he again consulted the "joshi" before leaving. The soothsayer told him that he would die in 1933.

Ranji accepted the prophecy with submissive calm.

When he returned to India, he said to one or two of his English friends: This is the last time that I shall cross the ocean."

Anyone who has been in the East knows how easily death comes to un Oriental if he believes that he is going to die.

Many people will wonder if the jrghi's prophecy hastened Ranji'. nel.
