Opinion in the Park County is very strong as to the necessity for "Old this independence, writes. Ebor." The reason assigned by official Rugby Unionists outside the county for the continuance of the present three-cornered allian- ce of the Notts and Lincolnshire | make ends meet. is that if support of Derbyshire other two were withdrawn the Unions would collapse so far as county football is concerned.

The reply of the Peak men is that they ought not to have their progress, hampered by having the two other weak shtres dragging at their heels. It is a natural atti- tude to take up, and one may hope this will be recognised by the Rug- by Union Committee when mak- ing their arrangements for next

On the other hand, a glance at attendance statistics shows a de- inite improvement on last season and things may not be quite so bad as hitherto.

Win For The Navy

Navy and Army Draw

SEM” 'QOTEL”

The Navy-Army brought to a finish on the Club ground yesterday when the Navy won by eight wickets, thanks to a fine knock by Lieut. Larkin who was undefeated, with 49. Lieut. Carver helped with a useful 29, and one feature of the game was that these two players also came off in the first innings. Larkin had| bad luck in the first innings when he just missed the three-figure mark by one run while Lieut. Mar- tin, going in rather rate, made 70.

The Army captain made a sport ing declaration when he applied the closure after they had scored 231 for 9, Capt. Peter Williams was in happy mood and collected 76 runs which included a sixer.

As a result of, the rain, the wicket was dead and the bowlers got no help whatever from "it.

The scores were:--„ Army, 1st innings

Very few turned out to witness the match played on the Sookunpoa ground between teams selected from the Navy and Army when H, E. The Commander in Chief, Admiral Sir Frederick Charles Dreyer, K C.B., C.B.E, kicked off, after the players of both teams had been in- troduced to him. The gate receiptą went towards the fund being raised by the Navy for the dependante of the late Petty Officer Sells. The Navy bands were in attendance and. played (selections on the ground before the kick off and during the interval.

The game onded in a draw of two goals all, the Navy having the lead at the interval by thì only goël. scored.

The Navy pressed from the kick off, but found Combey in form between the sticks for the Army. The sailors took the lead when Barnett headed into the net from s centre by Skinner, ja aboga

The Army played better after the change over, but the Navy defence was very sound. Both goals had narrow escapes, the Army having bad luck in not drawing level: Fairless sent in and Barnett turned the ball of Combey's reach in the Det,

Being two goals down, the Army rallied and Matthias following up a weak clearance from Pepper, lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper's head into the net. This success made the Army go all out to level ap and Ridley was successful with a hard drive. A struggle for the winning goal failed, the final whistle sounding with the score two all.

The teams were:

R. Navy Pepper; James, West; Purkins, Blair, Mitchell; Fairless,"
