WAR SHIPS IN PORT,
ANOTHER GENERATION.
Cenotaph, . I Walked past the just before midnight on Saturday. Not more than twenty people were moving round. Most of them were very young, mere boys and girls.
It was impossible to escape not- ing the shrunken proportions of the moral tributes, Not many years ago they
covered double and treble the area,···
Some motorists, paying scant regard to the little band gathered in mid-Whitehall, roared past noisily, heedless alike of sentiment and safety. One felt a sense of resentment, and then remembered that these youths had never known the war.

The organisation of these fire- nighting squads would not be a costly matter and certificates of proficiency might be "granted on the same principle as is adopted regarding lifeboat service. By this means a 'close' watch would be maintained over every part of the ship, special arrangements being made to ensure due supervisioni being exercised when the vessel was in port. Concerning extin- gutahing systems, Mr. Woods struck a note of warning respecting, the use of steam. Heated water vapour is lighter than air, and as air re- pienishes the supply of re-feed- ing oygen, it is eastitial, if steam is relied upon to eliminate any fire which might occur in them, that other enclosed spaces holds and should be rendered air-tight The new "emulsion" system, which is, approved by the Board of Trade, disposé of oil fires by spraying | » SHIRALA *: the off surface with water under NALDERA pressure, thus spitting the burn BHUTAN ing liquid into minute. globules, "SANTELA” each of which is surrounded with | -50BFU- a protective film of water. - From the Syren and Shipping London
