STARGAZING

It was amazing how great a crowd gathered to watch the two Wightman Cup tennis players, despite the short notice they gave The Bank as usual occupied their grandstand in force; how tired they must be of not havirig been able to sit down for ten whole days!" Most of the offices must have knocked off early too, for by five o'clock the dollar seat were packed solid and late comers had collected in a serried mass at the far side of the court. I am sure at least half of them could see nothing whatever, bul still they came. They must have. been about ten deep all along that side. From where I was sit- ting I could only pick out three familiar faces-Mr. Maurice Bar-- and the ton right at the back, General and his A.D.C. on the row of chairs opposite the umpire. Among the hundreds of people on the stand I recognised. Major Duclos, the Canadian Trade Com- missioner, Mr. Wolf and Mr. Da-

of the A.P.C vonport Browne, General Maurice Cohen, the most romantic gure in South China, and Lieutenant "Bill" Bailey, who is to be married to-morrow to Miss Margaret King. I thought

she looked charming in a bright I liked, too, Mrs. yellow jersey. Elliott's large and shady hat Mrs. Owen Hughes' tiny one with the orange feather, Mrs. Bousfeld', pluri-coloured tam o'shanter, and Nelson Jones' fascinating pleated sleeves.

THE FASHION STAKES

There was a big field for this the most important race of the day. Miss Scott Harston's White Collar won by a neck from Mrs. Sheldon's Pink Suit There was a bit of a tussle for third place. which eventually went to MTS. Tinson's Cerise Eleeves, only just in front of Lady Marnival's Royal Blue, Lady Peel' Javy Blue, and Mrs Sand's Olde who tame in together. Less than a length behind were Mrs. Button's Red Hat, Miss Sutton's Yellow Blouse, Mrs. Stellingworth's Angora Fea- ther, and Miss O'Hagan's Printed Brown:" and following closely were Miss Dowbiggin's Green Check, Mrs. Scames' Pink and Navy, Mrs. Smithers' Soft Tweed, and Mrs. Simmons' Bottle Green. This was a Arst class race, and paid easily the best dividend of the afternoon.

IN PRAISE OF MURDER

Several books to recommend to you this week. I have been in- ubigng in an orgy of detective stories, and though most of them were not worth even the time they. took to skim through, there were three I really enjoyed. Don't you' always, pounce on a new Agatha Onristle? Well, you will like "Lord Edgeware Dies, If only because Poirot appears again in all his glorious self-confidence. Áry Agatha Christie is readable, bui the Poirot stories are undoubtediy the best Then there is a new Ronald Knox; this I recommend

its for the excellence of writing and the ingenuity of its plot. Though I contend that the actual murder was not sufficiently intel- ligent to have worked out any. thing 80 complicated, it is a wonderful scheme, and I have mentally tabulated the second idea as one worth remembering 1

HAPPY VALLEY

Saturday was Race Day again and lovely weather into the bar gain. I would almost as soon watch the fashion parade stroll ing up and down the lawn as see my horse struggle not to Bé last. (Would you belleve that two of them actually WERE, confound them? Not that I lost so much, but it is so insulting to one's Judgment. I can trust that much better on the question of clothes and, what is more, be sure of a dollar or so for describing them to you! One way of making up one's losses. Isn't it?

Now that the winter has begun to sold I really must get down reading again. Not that I never read in the summer, but the hours that I used to spend basking in the run are now spent in front of the fire instead. (I ain avery Outward for Europe via Soes ty cat for warmth!). Can you ima-Antenor 3.30 p.m. gine anything more confortable than a big armchair, a roaring blaze, and a good book? How I should hate to live in a country. where there are no open fireplaces worse stili, no. fires at all It would be bad enough to have Hockey with light RASC. no cold weather, elothes and mosquito nets all the p.m. year round; but to have to give up nursery, tea, with a slice of p.m. current bread slowly browning at the end of the work, one's cheeks 7.18 and 17.08.
