Less than a length behind were Mrs. Button's Red Hat, Miss Sutton's Yellow Blouse, Mrs. Stellingworth's Angora Fea- ther, and Miss O'Hagan's Printed Brown:" and following closely were Miss Dowbiggin's Green Check, Mrs. Scames' Pink and Navy, Mrs. Smithers' Soft Tweed, and Mrs. Simmons' Bottle Green. This was a Arst class race, and paid easily the best dividend of the afternoon.

I have been in- ubigng in an orgy of detective stories, and though most of them were not worth even the time they. took to skim through, there were three I really enjoyed. Don't you' always, pounce on a new Agatha Onristle? Well, you will like "Lord Edgeware Dies, If only because Poirot appears again in all his glorious self-confidence. Áry Agatha Christie is readable, bui the Poirot stories are undoubtediy the best Then there is a new Ronald Knox; this I recommend
its for the excellence of writing and the ingenuity of its plot. Though I contend that the actual murder was not sufficiently intel- ligent to have worked out any. thing 80 complicated, it is a wonderful scheme, and I have mentally tabulated the second idea as one worth remembering 1
