Elissa Landi says she has solved the problem of dressing for in- formal evenings and the result is not only practical but attractive in the extreme.

Here's the idea which can be used to advantage by anyone,

Miss Landi wears a skirt, made of glossy black satin, that is cut very high about the ribs and is held in place by, narrow shoulder straps dorming a deep V both in front and back. The hem-line of the skirt flares out in a soft rip- pling fullness that takes away any tailored look.

Spectacle on a monumental scale, including a whole panoramic pio ture of Rome under the reign of Nero; a dynamic story of elemental events crowded into the space of forty eight hours; a series of per- formances of sheer brilliance! It is na wonder that audiences bere, as well as all over the country, cheering DeMille's achievement.

The spectacular type of film, such as DeMiller himself made famous in the silent days, ir ons of the screen's finest contributions to entertain- ment. Nq other medium has the scope and variety of the camera, Now with the addition of sound, the grant director has been able to surpass all his past efforts.

"The Sign of the Cross," is first and foremost a spectacle of pagan Rome, reaching its fullest expres- sion in a Roman holiday at the Circus Maximus, where the gladia- torial contests and all, the brutal games that delighted Nero served as a prelude to the sacrifice of the Christians to the lions. But it is also a dramatic story of Christian persecution, and a tenderly beauti- ful love story of a Christian girl and a Roman patrician, whose roles are played with rare beauty by Elissa Landi and Frederic March.

It is Charles Laughton's Nero, however, which is not only the out- standing characterization of the film, but one of the memorable characterizations of all times. Here is acting that approaches genius. Claudette Colbert, too," a the per- Empress Poppass, gives a formance of remarkable depth and power.
