One of the subjects on
which opinion in the shipping industry seems to have developed lately is the disposal of second hand British tonnage to foreign owners. So long as the latter are prepared to pay higher prices for ships to be continued in service than are offered for vessels to be scrapped, owners may find themselves, on occasion, having to make a di- cult choice. They may realize fully that in selling ships to be maintained in service under fore- ign naga, enabling the ships to be worked cheaper,, they are encour aging keen competition which will
them and adversely affect whole of the industry, but they may reason that in the interests of their shareholders they are entitled to obtain the best prices they can for the old vessels “and to leave the future to take care of itself. IMPROVEMENT IN STEEL
*TRADE
Sheffield to-day is producing a much greater tonnage of steel than it did in pre-War days and its output at the present time is 27.000 tons a month more than at the same time last year. These facts were given by Mr. C. J. Walsh, the now Master Culter, in a speech after his installation to- day.
Since the beginning of this year, he said, there had been a gradual but definite improvement in the steel trade of the country, The average monthly output of steel for the country over the first eight-months of the year was more than 99,000 tons greater than the monthly average for the whole of 1932, and with the addi- tion of several large furnaces that had recently been started up in various parts of the country the output would be substantially in- creased. Mr. Walsh also spoke of the increased passenger trafic and goods returns on the railways and the improved 'agricultural position sa further evidence of Britain's Increased prosperity.

Cotton: Speculative and trade buying continued. Sentiment con- tinued friendly.
Silver: Opened higher in line with the steadiness of London and the firmness of Bbanghat. The advance attracted long profit-taking. Offer ings were well absorbed. However, there was no broad speculative demand at any time.
