(Special Air-Mail Service)

London, October 10. The Imperial Institute, whose future is now under discussion, has always been intimately con nected with the Royal Family,

It was founded by King Edward to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of his mother, and the present King has always been solicitous of its welfare.

The position of the Institute was reported on in disquieting terms by the Skelton Committee. which pointed out that, feiting

new sources of revenue. the re- sources of the Institute "would be exhausted by 1937.

It is now under the aegis of the Department of Overseas Trade. FRUTIFUL RESEARCH

If

the Institute is closed the country will lose something more than its one remaining source of education in Imperial matters. It will lose the valuable fruits of the researches of the Institute's fine laboratories,

DANGER IN THE HOME

The Performing Rights Society can now invade the home as well. The owner of a car with a wire- less set is an offender if a copy- right work is performed, while people other than the owner and his, or her, family are in it.

Besides, people not in the cal might hear the music; this ap- Plies to portable sets on the sea- shore, on the river, or in one's own garden, if audible outside.

Indeed, in order to be perfectly safe, one should switch off the wireless at home the moment anyone calis, since a copyright number may be coming over. «

And how is the public to know what is or is not, copyright? Ob- viously B.B.C. make this clear.

LOUIS "WAIN'S CATS

امر

The admirers of Louis Waia, whose drawings of cats made him famous, will be glad to hear that his health has improved. In 1925 he had a serious mental break down, and since then he has been in a private home at St. Albans. Throughout this period he has found happiness in drawing. Be is now 72 years old, and in his lifetime he has drawn over a quarter of a million cats in pencil and in colour. There is still a considerable demand for Louis Wain cat drawings. "I saw some originals offered at 7s. 6d, each in a bookshop "off Holborn a few

days ago,

Wain has been experimenting recently in painting on glass. He has, too, made a number of draw- ings of dogs, which show the safne humour and sureness of touch as his more famous cat subjects.

"SUBMARINE 128.

"

The most plausible explanation of the disaster in Submarine "126 is that it was caused by a hydrogen explosion. If the report that the vessel was charging her batteries at the time is confirmed. the hydrogen theory may be re- garded as established.

DR. INGE'S RETIREMENT

Though the Dean of St. Paul's has bought a house in the country and is preparing to make his home there when he leaves London, no date has, I under- stand, been fixed for his retirer 'nent from the deanery.

I think it might be found that the dean has not yet taken the formal steps which must be the necessary preliminary to his va- eating his office. If that be 20, it seems unlikely that he will Anally leave St. Paul's before East-

It is a tall eight-day grand- father by Thomas Tompion, who made it about 1880.

It plays ten or more of what were, I fmagine. the "theme- songs" of the day."

The present owner told me that five or six of the cylinders havė been preserved, thus allowing for the change of tune, each cylin der bearing two tunes.
