FEAR in the NIGHT

·Banish It From Your Child's Mind

Br Dr. LECHMERE ANDERSON

Children are queer murtsis. There is no such thing as a normal child. Each possesses a distinct heri- tage, physical and mental idiosyncr- asies of one or both parents, and even peculiarities of far-away investors.

To Fathom and follow the workings of a child's mind is an entrancing study, and will well repay the parent who has intelligence, patience, and time.

them to bring something from an upstairs room during the evening.

If the child persista in night terrors there is cause for it. Probably he is highly nervous, there may be some physical cause.

The parents must deal gently, but firmly, with him, appealing to his reason, assuring him by turning the lights up and down that there is no reason for fear,

His physical condition may

and the trouble-be over.

If a child is afraid of the dark, there is some reason for it. To force him to go to bed way be a triumph for the parent, but it does not remove the cause of fear.

DON'T BE AFRAID' The child is lying there tense to every sound, his heart thumping and his imagination running not tor mented by dreadful impossibilities. Sleep comes eventually, merciful relief which an intelligent mother could have produced at the outset.

The rational treatment is to find out the cause of the child's fear.

Many mothers lay the foundations of fear in the early days of infancy. They accustom the "baby"to a night- light, and as he grows older they suggest that he need not be afraid of anything and withdraw the light. By suggesting it the child is prepared for something to happen, and therefore it anything does occur he is at once alarmed.

Another cause of fear in the hearing of unsuitable tales during the evening,

Children who have fallen out of bed in infancy have cause to be afraid of being left alone in the dark. To pre- vent this occurring, a safety net should be used over the cot. If such an ac cident has happened a small right- light may be used until the child is no longer afraid.

Children are very artful, and will try all kinds of dodges to keep in touch with mother rather than be left alone after being put in bed.

A favourite trick is the plaintive cry: T'm so thirsty; please bring me

PEACEFUL SLEÉP

Children will usually settle down quite comfortably and happily if they can take a favourite toy to bed with them. It may be a doll, a woolly bear, a book, or even a mechanical toy.

Rival Queens

But Queen Victoria, Like Queen Aune, was something of a senti mental, Jacobite at heart, and, romantically, Mary Queen of Scots was a more attractive figure than the greater Queen whose implacable rival she was.

She Originated the Idea of a State Lottery Although the alleged excuse for this unprecedented step was the repair of harbours and fortifications and other public works, it must have caused an unpleasant jar to the sense of propriety in a great many quarters.
