Old Boy

At the request of the B.C.A., who considered that the maximum of a year's hard labour which one 'Ma- gistrate could give, would not meet the case, Mr. Wynne-Jones and Mr. Balfour jointly' sat at Kowloon Magistracy yesterday to hear the charge against Tang Shin, a widow, of kidnapping a 4- year old child from his mother's house.

Outlining the case Sub-Inspector Eiston, attached to the B.C.A., sald the clitid lived in Sheung Sha Pul Village with her mother and the defendant was also a gardener there. On October 11 defendant went to complainant's house to look for work. She left the house about 4 p.M. and after she had gone it was found that the Httle

also boy was

missing. At first suspicion did not attach to defen- dant, but, subsequent to a report to the police, the villagers held a meeting and decided to watch de fendant. On October 14 she re- turned to the village to visit an- other neighbour and was arrested. She admitted taking, the boy from his mother's house and keeping him in hers while she found purchaser. The boy was eventual- ly gold to a widow in Yuen Long Village who had no children of her own, for 83150, $30. of which defendant had already received.

She gave as her excuse that ber husband had died and the man

who kept her was 111 in hospital. and she wanted money to pay the hospital bills. Against that how ever was proof that she had found a purchaser before she took the

ild.

Defendant pleaded guilty. Mr. Wynne-Jones: You told the Inspector your man was in hospi- tal, why is it when "the police made enquiries they could not find him?-I don't know why.

A few years ago, the European Y.M.C.A. ran a fairly strong team. and what they lacked in material, they made up in keeness. For the past two years, however, things have taken an entirely aspect al together, for with D. McLellan, the well-known. interport sports- man, at the head of things, hockey in the "Y" soon grew to be one of the most popular pastimes in that institution. Not only has McLellan built up the men's teams, but his advice has proved to be of the greatest help to the team run by the Ladies Section of the Asso- ciation. In this direction credit also must be given Mr. E. F. Selk for the hard work he has put in. "

To confine myself to the men's team, however, I shall first of all state that so far as their forward line is concerned, the European Y.M.C.A. will have no equal in the Colony this season, I shall deal with that later and as a "bully- of" will start from the goal- keeper, George Duncan, who did so much useful work between the sticks for Shameen and who is generally acknowledged to be one of the finest goal-keepers in South China. I saw him in action in a few games and it was absolutely uncanny to see the way he stopped the shots that are fired at the

Geoffrey Lammert, another play- er, who has done great things for the Club, will lead the forwards and he will have Brown and his cousin Frank Lammert as his in- side men These three have learnt to understand each other's play in the few games that they have had together and they are al highly dangerous inside the circle. Sydney Fowler and T. J. Price will probably fill the outside positions, and as both of them have a lot of speed in them, they will give whoever are up against them a really tough time of it.

I would like to see & game between the "Y" and the best eleven the Hong Kong Hockey Club can pick. It would, be a game worth travelling a long way to see, and, although. I know the Club have a very formidable side, I should be rather inclined to put my money on the "y" should the game come off.
