Plenty of appealing musical num- bers lift "Moonlight and Pretzels" from being just another back stage Bereen musical." As is so often the case the title has little to do with the show itself. it might as well have been called "Dusty Shoes," which is just as much. if not more of an embelishment to the musical score than the theme song.
Composed by tour of our leading song writers, the tuneful melodies in this musicomedy refret the spirit of the times in an unique mander. "Dusty Shoes" is by Jay Gourney And E. H. Harburg and it is a: enivalcade of American life from 1999 to 1933. The highlights depict- ed in song and action are the boom year, the erash, the depression years and the New Deal. "Moon- light and Pretzels," a drinking song, is also by Gourney and Har- burg, and tells a lyrical story of peace and contentment since the legalization of beer.. "I Gotta Get Up and Go to Work," depicts various types rising in the morning and preparing for their jobs with new hopes and new hearts. It is by Herman Hupfeld. Other in- fectious numbers are "Ah, But Is, It Love" "There's a Little Bit of You in Every Love Song," "Aro You Making Any Money?" "Daby. in Your Heart."
and
Roger Pryor is swell in his role na Nick, Leo Carillo is a panic, Mary Brian is her sweet self and Lilliane Miles puts over her songs satisfactorily.
Besides the featured players the picture is filled with radio, stage and former picture players of the old musical comedy days. There are, for instance, Alexander Gray, Bernice Claire, and Richard Keene, also Jack Denny and his Orchestra, Mary Langr, Max Stamm, James Carson, Frank and Milt Brillan and the Four Eton Boys.
Karl Freund directed the delight- ful musical in New York and Bobby Cannelly, famous for his beautiful choruses, doesn't fail to add to the show with his heavy of dancing beauties.
"Moonlight and Pretzels" tells the story of George Dwight, a small-town vaudeville: hoofer with ambition to be a big-time song writer. He finds himself stranded in a small up-state town and Bally Upton, proprietor of the local music store, helps him out with a job. Sally falls in love with him immediately but George is too busy to think about love. He goes to New York and scores a hit as a composer of musical comedy suc- cesses. Although Sally hasn't heard from him she decides to go to New York and get a job in one of his shows. George has difficulty with the kings of the theatre world but is through Sally that be wing
