A DEPARTMENT STORE FOR KOWLOON?
Chance For An Enterprising Firm
(By Our Special Correspondent)
Kowloon residents are always crying for improveraents to the business and social amenities of the peninsula. They have made very considerable progress, has been made and while the mainland is ahead of Hong Kong is some ways, there are a good may things that the Island boasts, which cannot be found in Kowloon. So for residential quarters and buildings are concerned, I think it must be admitted that Kowloon stands level with Hong Kong. This is also the case regarding roads etc, and es for hotels and boarding houses, Kowloon at least holds its own when compared with "the other side."

have the stores become. The greatest attraction, however, is that there need be moving about on a hot-day for one can easily go up or down in the lifts that are installed in these buildings.
Kowloon is a little backward on this score. True, one can get all one wante in the different stores in the peninsula, unt this may entail a lot of trouble. For instance, there are a number of silk stores near the Peninsula Hotel. Supposing I were to do my shopping in one of these store and then, suddenly, I wake up my mind to get a radio set. This would mean trip down to Jorlan Road or there-abouts, and even if I can get there easily enough on a

Barracks.
The rifle range at Whitfield Bar- racks, Kowloon, was the scene of a fire on Friday night, when a matshed shelter caught alight. The blaze wit a rather alarming one and the struc- ture was destroyed before the fanies could be put out by the combined ef forts of the firemen and military.
The fire started shortly before. mid- night and a call was sent out the Fire Brigade. Two engines from 1simsha taut were soon on the scene, followedt by a third from Mengkok, and with the help of the military the fire was extinguished within a quarter of ant hour.
The origin of the blaze is unknown bus it is suspected that it was caused by some coolies who slept in the place
There is one thing, however, that 1. bus, it means such a lot of incon- TODAY'S AQUATIC

Take the case of the Hong Kong stores again. If 1 happened to be in the men's department in Sincere's and I suddenly made up my mind to get a -shave or a radio set. All I should have to do would be to walk to the lift and in next to no time, I am where I want to go.
There are any number of shops and stores in Kowloon. One need only walk along Nathan Road to see this Motor garages, watch-makers, drug. The most obvious reason "for the gista, Borists, general stores, restaur-need for such a store is that it would auta, radio supply shops, in fact, save Kowloon residents the trouble of almost any kind of shop may be seen doing the shopping in Hong Kong and then carrying the parcels all the way home. Probably it would not affect the many excollant little businesses in Kowloon for there are always plenty of people who like to go from place to place to ensure getting the best at the lowest price."

While one can get almost any article in these stores, one feels that there is room for a large department store, something after the style of Sincere's or the China Emporium. Let it be argued, however, that there are already too many stores in the peninsula, and There are many enterprising busi-
