YESTERDAY'S, LAWN BOWLS
Playing on the Civil Service green yesterday the Shanghai lawn. bowlers skipped by Lopes went un- der to a team representing Vic- toria, skipped by A. W. Grimmitt. The visitors were beaten by 23 shots to 15. ·
Lopes proved to be unsuited for the position of skip and except for a few rare instances failed badly. W. A. Bailey played No. 1 for Shanghai and he, also, was by no means at home in that position Main played well as No. 2 and Richards who was No. 3 proved to be the best player in the visiting.

Work was on the slow side at Happy Valley yesterday and practically, all the ponies engaged at the coming meeting, were tried out. Woodland Stag covered a fast mile in, 2.01, running beautifully all the way and finishing in a convincing manner. He will be a big rival, to Portia in the Australian race on Saturday..
A tearingly fast last quarter was put in by Sunup, who won the Australian race at the last meeting. Sunup went over a slow mille and finished the last quarter mile in 26.2 seconds.
