N.I.R.A. CHIEFS STILL WORRIED

COAL CODE CAUSING ACUTE ANXIETY

STEEL WORKERS TO ASK GOVT. TO INTERVENE

New York, October 1.

While the application of the Coal Code to miners in " mines operated by iron and steel companies is expected to lead to the resumption of work of a hundred thousand striking miners and steel workers, and while the mob of five thousand coal strikers who trekked to Clairton, Penn- sylvania, yesterday, ceased picketing the Carnegie Steel- works there and are returning home, the unsolved prob. lem of Union recognition, which is the issue of most strikes, is still causing the N.I.R.A chiefs the most acute an.. xiety.

Ten thousand strikers, employed at the Weirton Steel Company, who allege a number of their follow-workers were dismissed owing to Union- Affiliations threaten to seek Government intervention if the Company does not recognises their Union.

GEN. JOHNSON HOLDS HURRIED

CONFERENCE

After examining the coal situation in Western Penn- sylvania, N.I.R.A. Officials are of the opinion that agree- ment in regard to iron and steel companies mines would not be sufficiently satisfactory to send all minerą back to the pits.

General Jonhson, who is still in hospital, summoned representatives of the United Mine Workers and steel Companies Mines to an immediate conference with a view to a settlement of the dispute.

A strong plea to workers to use the strike weapon only as a last resort was made by Mr. Green, Secretary of the American Federation of Labour, in which he urges workers who have grievances first to use the National State Labour Boards. If they fail to secure redress there- by, then, they will be justified in striking, but should pon- der deeply before going on strike.
