Professor, W. Lyon Blease, intro" ducing Mr. Holt to the Vice-Chan- cellor, said Richard Durning Holt was not the Arst member of his family to receive an honorary de- gree from this University. He had inherited a name which was fam- ous in Liverpool and wherever else merchants were held in honour, and he had enlarged his inherit- ance,

The flag of his House was known upon all the oceans, and still re- presented the integrity, the re- gularity, and the far-seeing and deliberate enterprise with which it As had always been associated. the chairman of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, he applied to the service of the whole port of Liverpool the same earnest indus- try that he had applied to his own affairs.

Mr. Holt had helped to forge" the links which united British with Chinese Universities. He was an active Justice of the Peace, and he had been a member of Parlament, but for too short a time. But they knowing too many politiciana who were the friends of every opinion but their own, saluted the admir- able independerice of that unre- pentant individualist-(laughter)

that austere Odysseus, bound to his solitary mast, for whom the Fabian sirens, sang in vain. (Re- newed) laughter).
