THE

EMDEN

AT THE QUEEN'S THEATRE

One seldom finds in the world's history 1 similar example of heroism, and self sacrifice as wit- nessed on the German Cruiser Emden. She was a free-booter of the Pacific for six tonths. At the outbreak of the war. the Emden was on patrol in the Yellow Sea around the district of Tsingtau. Mertens who was employed as fore- man in a German Electrical, house wet and fell in love with a girl called Greta. who worked as typist in the same organisatiga. At the utbreak of wax Mertens who, was on the reserve list, had to enroll, so obtained a special licensë and married Greta before going to the front. While they were celebrat- ing at the hotel a sailor called Pet- zold enters and recognizes the girl who happened to be a former sweet- heart of his. The situation be conies rather strained and we next Be both men on the cruiser Em- den.

Petzold made several attempts. to be friendly with Mertens, but he was embittered and did not wish to have anything to do with him. The Emden? siled on the 10th of August and she joined the Squadron of the Graff Spec. After spending a short time with the squadron she received orders to go and carry out operations on her wn. She then proceeded in com pany of the enal tender Marco inania. She then started her scouting on the main tracks of the shipping lines of the Indian Ocean. She sank endless numbers of ships including the troopship. Indus, the Buresk, an English | Collier, which she held as a prise, and, which she demanded accom- pany her. Through the enemy's wireless the Emden learned of the presence of a Russian cruiser the Schemschug in the harbour Penang. On the 28th of October the Commander of the Emder do- cided to engage this cruiser in the harbour. With doused lights: the Emden approached the harbour of Penang. The Commander and his Officers happened to be amusing themselves

THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

BEAUTIFUL STORY OF THE ETERNAL TRIANGLE

it

"The Animal Kingdom which opened its run at the Central Theatre yesterday may be describ ed as a beautifully told story of the" eternal triangle," and would be no exaggeration to Bay that with the leading roles in the capable hands of players like Leslie Howard, Ann Harding and Myrna Loy, the story is rendered even more beautiful."

Ann Harding we all know, and Myrna Loy too is just as clever an Betress. As for Leslie Howard, the young British actor, he has long since became a favourite în Hollyward and his portryal of a sensitive young publisher is indeed one of his best pieces of work.

Myrna Loy as his nasty nice wife plays her part to perfection. She has just that particular appeal in her that suits her so well to parts like that, while Miss Harding gives us yet another sample of her versatility

Put together side by side, these two charming actresses strike a very interesting contrast and that. alone" makes the picture one that should not be missed. It is excel- leut entertainment..

But Bill was so anxious to get to Hollywood that he dig up a sum of money and bought his release.
