However, reaction set in later and a advance of about half a dollar on the last "trading day for July cotton may be recorded, which was mainly due to the strong attitude of the bull clique who manifested great enthusiasm in taking up about 15,000 piculs of standard cotton in face of the fact that some of the tendering Chinese mills, were whatever little was available from their stocks. Domestic cotton of a desirable quality is very near ex- haustion point and some consumers are booking Indian cotton on speculative basis. SHANGHAI DOCK AND ENGINEERING CO.
BUSINESS SHOWING
IMPROVEMENT.
Shanghai, July 29.-Satisfaction with the result of the year's work- ing was expressed at the twenty-" seventh annual general meeting of the Shanghai Dock and Engineer- ing Co., Ltd, held yesterday after noon at the head office, 160 Broad-
way.
Addressing the meeting, the chair- man, Mr. B. D. F. Beith, said in part:-
"In reviewing the past year's ac tivities one is impressed with the fact that business conditions"-in China are not less difficult than hitherto and the general world-wide depression continues to affect local and other ship-owners to the extent. of reducing all repairs and up keeps to the lowest possible figures.
"Our business in general, how- ever during the year improved a
little and repair work showed a slight increase; we still have the heavy Custom duties levied on all materials for engineering and ship- building constructional and repair work to contend with, and it is most unfortunate that such import" ant industries as shipbuilding and engineering and associated trade. should be prevented from their full development by the imposition of heavy duties on all necessary mate- rials.
Docks Wall Occupied. ***Our dry docks, which constitute one of our main sources of revenue in docking and contingent repair work, have been well occupied by vessels for painting and ather in dispensable work during the year and a good number of wheat-laden and other foreign owned vessels: took advantage of the cheap local- dry-docking rates to dock and over- port: haul before leaving the several carried out their special classification surveys and we hope to obtain a larger amount of such work in the future.

The Shanghai four market han been steady, Business has been small. Prices are unchanged.
An interesting feature during the week of report is the fact that several cargoes of high grade Argentino wheat have arrived. The wheat is excellent in appear. ance and the mills are very much; satisfied with it. The difference between this high grade wheat which just has arrived, and, the low grade which arrived two months ago. is tremendous, and the mills who originally have preferred to buy the superior quality and ac cordingly pay a higher price, are receiving the full reward for their. cautious policy,
-There has been very slightly more activity in the paper market, dur ing the last week, although the or dere booked only amount to fairly small quantities. Home prices are very firm and this, coupled with the higher duties and the usual seasonal slackness, makes the már- ket on the, whole very quiet. 25415 Deliveries from local stocks have boen fair a Lara importers (Continued on next column)

Asia Landa, Limited, has received the following report from their New
York correspondents, E. A. Pierce & Co. We think that the duliness: prevailing is subject to a constructive interpretation rather than the reverse and believe that there could be no adverse criticism, provided." the period of relative quietness would keep up for a few weeks longer. It looks as though the volume of liquidation had dried up and perhaps there will be little stock pressing for sale until the market has reached last week's highs. Wheat: The establishment of minimum prices until August 18th checked long liquidation and induced new long buying. Winnipeg advanced sharply on reports of liberal exports and sales and continued crop damage. Cotton: The declines of the past few days have undoubtedly strengthened the technical position, though the recovery in other markets has been partly responsible for the improved tone. Silver: Early in the day values declined on lower cables and continued long liquidation. The market met with support at the close on buying by the Trade and commission houses. Business Done: 1,780,000 shares. :-
