The shallowness of the Moscow riverbed has prevented the capital's development as an important river part in the past, the bulk of its freight being handled by rail, The encumbrance of railroad traffic with growing production, however, has revived the Moscow Yoga canal project on which work has already commenced. This in turn involves a huge programme of con- "RANCHI” struction along the Moscow river CARTHAGE"

Deep Waler Route. :
The Moscow-Volga canal will raise the depth of the Moscow river from a summer average of one me tre to an average of from 3 to 3.5 metres. The river system will directly connect Gorki, Yaroslavl, Perm and Rybinsk with a deep- water route navigable through, the greater part of the year, and per mitting freight vessels to unload in Moscow instead of reshipping the goods by rail from outlying deep-water ports. In addition, water routes will, permit naviga tion between Moscow and the White Sea, Lake Onega, Karelia and points along the Baltic Lakes,
A great extension of passenger. traffic along the Moscow river is foreseen by the new plans. During the latter part of 1931, when "river trams began operation, 830,000 were carried, chiefly passengers within the city limits. Last year the number soared to 1,500,000. The dredging of the river, together with the added volume of inflowing water will enable a development of inter-city and long-distance pas. sanger communications. Existing plans provide for 100 additional vessels with a minimum hourly speed of 18 kilometers to carry an estimated burden of 15,000,000; pris; sengers in 1937.
Food Control
With the numerous advantages in aight, construction engineers face a group of serious technical problems. Fox, with the added volume of water from the Volga, the flood possibilities of the Mos cow stream are bound to increase.
The disastrous flood of the spring of 1908, which destroyed
9,300 homes, depriving 1180,000 inhabi tants of shelter and inundating a vast stretch of territory, is not forgotten Flood control points will be established within the city and among the tributaries; banks will be raised and other precan tions taken. Tass,
