QUOTATIONS

With sterling exchange bring lower to-day, both Banks and Unions made a smart recovery, the former being bid for at 91,790 and the latter $553 without attracting any sellers. Utilities were not quite so good to-day, Hong Kong Trams and Telephones having cas- ed of slightly, probably due to profit. taking.

Nothing else in the list calls for special comment, except that Cements have further receded, and changed hands at 86.10 for the com- bined shares. This is the lowest price Cements have touched in the past ten years

Profits Increased In A Difficult Year

GOLD EXPORTS AND INDIA'S TRADE

(Special Air-Mail Service)

LONDON, July 4, At the 13th ordinary general meeting of the P. & O Banking Corporation Ltd., Mr. W. E. Pres ton (the chairman), said that the result of the year shows a net profit of £111,318, which is an increase of some £4,000 on the results of the previous year "Shareholders will, I feel sure, be satisfied with this result, achieved in a yea of great unsettlement, dwindling trade, and of unstable market con ditions."

After paying our dividend, which, you will observe, owing to the in- cidence of Indian and British taxa- tion, requires some £4,000 more than last year, we are enabled to carry forward £44,553, as against 237,555 brought in.

We have materially increased our holdings of Indian Government securities, which at the close of last year were just over £3,500,000, an against £884,000 at March 31, 1832 To a large extent this is due to the absence of suitable advances in India, but equally to the improve ment in the Indian Government's Pre.. credit since 1913, which has been a primary inducing cause for our investing our spare funds in this

Alcohol stocks will probably have another spell of selling tomorrow and we think, on such; development, the best plan would probably be to purchase for a trading turn. This applies especially to rails Wheat: Heavy-liquidation wAS largely the result of a technical weakness. There is little change in crop news. Canadian advices show a worse condition, Wallace's pre diction of a two million bales carry-over had some influence. Cotton. General liquidation and professional selling was influenced by rains in: the West Belt, lower foreign exchange and acute weakness in the out- side marketa. The best demand came from the Trade: The weather is favourable in the East and unfavourable in the West Belt. 'Silver: There was heavy liquidation in sympathy with other market.
