of this year is 35 per cent, only of its value in the first quarter of 1929. Except for a slight re- covery in the last quarter of 1932 the decline has been continuous for four years; and the level reached in the first quarter of this year is the lowest yet recorded. Estimates in this case are as yet unavailable for 1983, but the annual decline between 1929 and 1932 was as follows: 7 per cent, in 1930, 9 to 10 per cent. in 1931, and 15 per cent. in 1933. The fall in the value of world trade in the first quarter of this year having been greater than the fall in prices, it is evident that the volume of trade is still shrink-
