WEEKLY REPORT

Due to the rise in exchange, Auctuations in Banks and Uniona in the latter part of the week harg been rather wide, the former afteři touching $1835 fell back to 81,700, or probably lower, and the latter, after 8870 declining to 8540. In

the case of Banks, they were ad- versely affected not only by the rise | in exchange, but also by a drop

of £2 in the London rabe.

On the other hand, most of the utilities, as also Hong Kong Lands, have been very firm in the period undef review, Telephones and Hong Kong, Trams making sub- stantial advances.

THE EXCHANGE MARKET

MESSRS, ROZA BROS.. REPORT

amounted to

Handley Page.

The accounts for 1032 of Handley Page. Ltd., aircraft manufacturers, show a net profit, including profit realization of investments and a transfer from income-tax reserve, of £8,135, A profit, of £3,394 was shown by the previous accounts, hát this figure did not include any transfer from reserves and was struck before changing £30,000, be- ing proportion of expenditure on development during the year. The fixed Preference dividend for 1832 is being paid, but as this absorb £19,914 the balance carried forward will be reduced from £12,195 to £416. Again no distribution is re- commended on the Ordinary shares Floating assets, £285,476; current liabilities, £32,679. The report states that the manufacturing operations of the company were re- stricted until the latter part of the year, when orders were restricted until the latter part of the year, when orders received for a number of the company's new type aircraft to replace a type now in service. Meeting, July.3.

.

P. and O. Banking Profits. The ramifications of the P. & 0.1 Banking Corporation in the East aro extensive, and some satisfaction is to be derived from the slight improvement in profits. For the period ended March 31, after pro- viding for taxation, bad and doubt." ful debts, and valuing investments at or below market price, the net profit amounted to £111,318, against £107,285 for the preceding year. The dividend of 5 p.d. is repeated, and the additional revenue is car ried forward, raising the surplus to £44,553, compared with £37,603 brought in.

slightly higher at £2,233,194. The chief movement is a rise from £3,757,308 to £5,395,223 in invest- menta in gilt-edged securities. Ad- vances have fallen from £3,173,788 to £2,463,430. Confidence in the improving financial strength of India is reflected in the huge i crease in Indian and Colonial Gov- ernment securities, which form the major part of the bank's invest

ments.

Lancashire and Japan in India.

The full Indian trade returns for

May have not yet been received, but the figures for April suggest that Lancashire is making some pro- gress in the competition with Japan for trade in cotton piece goods. Total imports of cotton piece goods in February were 80,162,000 yards, of which Great Britain supplied 45,303,000 yards, or nearly 12,000,000 yards more than Japan; in March there was a jump in. total imports to 103,230,000 yards, of which Great Britain sup plied 60,875,000 yards, of 21,000,000 yards more than Japan; there was a contraction to 88,298,000 yards in total imports in April, but Great Britain's share, ht 85,188,000 yards, was nearly 23,000,000 yards more than Japan's. Imports of grey goods in Lancashire were, for the second month in. auccession, though in contrast with the pre- vious trend of trade, at much the same level as those from Japan, and the figures suggest that the ten- dency for imports of Japanese coloured, printed, and dyed goods to equal those of Lancashire goods has been checked. The figures for are much more April. this year satisfactory than those for April last year, as will be seen from the following table of imports of the principal classes of piece goods-

Frankly the market is puzzl ing; it looks wild at times then suddenly quistens down. Industrials went to new highs. The bond market is strong. At the same time we think there must be a large amount of profit-taking. We suppose the only conclusion is to stay with the long-side, since celling dries up weakness and there are no definite signs of real liquidation in volume. Wheat: Market reactionary. There was heavy profit-taking on a scale: down. There are indications of cooler weather and some showers in the American and Canadian North-West. The Trade expects favourable developments in London with acreage reduction by four big producers... Cotton: There has been heavy profit-taking and hedging on the advance Weather conditions will now be an important market factor; with the acreage abandonment campaign mccessful. Silver: The Shanghai advance is attributed to a general belief that the Administration is committed to fifty cent alvor. The market absorbed heavy prost taking, closing dem."s
