Outlining the effect of the low price of silver since the War, the City Editor of "The Times" obser- ves that the effect of the low ex- change value of China's currency is causing China increasingly to in dustrialise herself and that the danger of industrial competition from a country with a low standard of living is obvious. The writer de clares that advocates of the rehabi litation of silver contend that a rise in the price of silver, by im- proving the standard of living in China, would prevent such a hot- house growth of industry and, by increasing Far Eastern purchasing power, woukl increase demand for and thus raise prices of other com modities.

The Timex says, however, that unless the outlet for silver among western gold-using natións is in- creased, there would be a check to the possible absorption of silver by gold countries; hence the sugges tion that more monetary use, should be made of silver by the nations generally.
