A BIG NEED AT KOWLOON

BETTER SERVICE OF DISPENSARIES

(BY OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)

What is one of the biggest need of Kowloon residents 1" That is a question that would baffle quite number of people and it is one which caused me no little thought, but, after pondering over it for somo time, I have come to the con- clusion that one thing Kowloon cer- tainly wants is a more adequate dispensary service.

Before going any further, it must he stated here that this does not imply that the dispensary service now in existence is faulty or in- efficient. In fact it is as good, up to a point, as anyone may wish for, but it could be improved, or rather enlarged, and if put into effect such

improvement put Kowloon "one up" on Hong Kong.

Only One Firm,

As far as I know, there is only one European firm of chemists in Kowloon at present and that is the Kowloon Dispensary (Messrs. A. S. Watson & Co.) and their businesa. hours arc-

Week days ... 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. 8.30 a.m. to 1. p.m. Sundays. Closed for business It will be seen therefore, that if a Kowloon resident wanted a prescription made-up, after 5 pm, he would have to make the journey over to Hong Kong and that would probably mean waiting an hour (or sometimes aven longer than that) before the mixture or whatever it is that has to be made up is ready.

Against this, however, I hear that there are one or two private dis- pensaries (owned by private medical practitioners) who keep open tall about 10 p.m. and in cases of emer- gency, they are always ready to oblige, but even then, if any infor- mation is leorrect, the request for the prescription to he made up has to come directly from a doctor. I am not saying that this is too strict; in fact if such dispensaries refuse any orders they are at per- fact liberty to do so, as they are, as I mentioned, purely private con- cerns and are not bound to keep open at all hours,

What Is Wanted.

Of course, it would be nothing short of absurdity to knock a man up in the small hours of the morn- ing for a bottle of aspirin, or some- thing like that, and anybody guilty of this would be sent away pretty summarily, But when there is a.

serious case and the doctor decides' that it is vitally necessary to get a certain drug or medicine, I sm shre

no man would mind being dragged out of bed to help, per- haps, save a life, or at least to ease the suffering of an unfortunate | individual,

Kowloon has developed tremend.

ously of late and seems to have

kept abrebst of times-shops, hotels, motor-can and taxi services, etc., but there are still some things that may be improved upon.

One feels sure that whoever takes the initial step towards giving the residents in the mainland a better

dispensary service would earn the real gratitude of that very big and cosmopolitan community, for that would indeed be u step in the right direction.

So far as I know, Hong Kong.is just na badly off in this special matter, and as it acems to be

di rigueur for Kowloonites to set the fashion to the more backward Islanders, let us hope they will take the lead again this time.

Mėsare, Watson's View,

Since writing the above, I have been able to ascertain from Mr. Patterson of Messrs. A. S. Watson & Co., that although they do not actually have a man on night duty

in their Kowloon store, the mha- ager, Mr. Gihson is very intimately known by all the doctore and be could always be found in cases of emergency.

Mr. Patterson added that this matter has been thrashed, out be-- tween the K.R.A. and the Company many a time and although Watson's were all for giving the public the best possible service, they did not think there was enough to demand to keep a chemist on the premises solely for night work. Such a step would mean a further expenditure of at least $6,000 a year for the Company.

What Kowloon wants, therefore, is a dispensary which will be kept open all night. I do not mean to

Mr. Patterson concluded by say suggest that they should keep a full' staff and conduct their businessining that doctors are required to the same way as they do in the day keep emergency drugs in their hand- time, but what I do mean to say bags, and that where cases are so. is this, that if a qualified chemist serious that an immediate dose of had his quarters above the store, any particularly drug is required, as is the case of most shops in the the time wasted in going to and more up-to-date cities, he would be from any dispensary would probably available when required.
